Book Description

Travel journo, Kairavi Krishna (Kay) has had it with men. After a series of disasters (losers, philanderers, leeches, mama’s boys and possessive psychos), she is all too tempted to walk out on the prospect of ever finding love. Accompanied by her best friend and flat-mate Baani, she sets off for Goa, hoping to get away from her miserable love life and vowing to stay clear of the male species.
Goa however, has a host of surprises in store for her. Ricky, her pesky ex-boyfriend, is busy painting the town red with his hot new girlfriend. Now what is poor Kay to do, other than overdose on vodka, smoke pot, get an outrageous tattoo and fall off the hotel balcony?
She wakes up in the hospital to the tender ministrations of Dr.Vivian D’Mello—young, suave and handsome as hell. Will Kay stick to her guns or will she fall for his ridiculously sexy charms? And what’s up with the mixed signals he’s giving out?

5.0 out of 5 stars A Worthy Piece of Romantic Comedy Writing February 6, 2014
By Maria
Format:Kindle Edition
A light read, a bright and breezy romantic comedy by an Indian author who could well be in the running to be the next Marian Keyes (you know who Marian Keyes is, surely? The queen of rom com fiction and chick lit? Who’s Irish just like me?).

The plot is simple enough. Writer Kairavi (Kay to her friends) has foresworn men after a string of failed relationships. An ill-fated night on the town leaves her hospitalized, however, with a tattoo declaring ‘Done With Men’ and considerable injury to her ego. A handsome Goan doctor with a poetical name enters her life and intrigues her, leading her a merry dance indeed. Suddenly, the hardened journo is wondering whether or not being ‘Done With Men’ forever is a little premature.

I loved the humour and the romance, the ‘will she or won’t she’ intrigue and the Goan sunshine. The writer has thoughtfully provided a list of Hindi terms at the back for those unfamiliar with the language, so this is a book which can be enjoyed by anyone who reads in English, even if they’re not Indian.

Shuchi Kalra is a witty and observant author who is already a well established blogger and editor. She has a perfect voice for women’s fiction with her dry humour and chatty writing style. Full marks to this one!

I received a review copy of this book in return for an honest review.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate rom-com! February 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Rarely do you find books that have the perfect mix of fun, laughter, romance and a dose of reality! You will fall in love with Kairavi, crave for a friend like Baani and drool over the oh-so perfect doctor! The authors command over english is praiseworthy, as she makes the scenes come alive, be it a day at the beach with high heels, or diarrhea! You will not regret reading this book, specially if you are a die hard romantic :) So make yourself a cup of hot cocoa and enjoy the heartwarming-ly funny life of Kairavi :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Engrossing read! Crisply written in a refreshing style. February 20, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I dont read chick-lit usually but this was free for some time on Amazon during a promotion and seemed like a quick, fun read looking at the cover (They lie when they tell you to not judge a book by its cover). Considering I usually prefer sci-fi and fantasy fiction, it really blew me away by how much I enjoyed it! It is not that short but really fast paced and engaging. It keeps you hooked to the end and was over in one long, enjoyable session. Definitely recommended on a flight or train journey. Also really enjoyed how the characters are fleshed out and resonate with our generation. The style and quality of writing was the most refreshing part about this novella and it was MUCH better than Chetan Bhagat, Amish and all the other "bestselling authors" who screw up on grammar in the most painful ways. All in all, a wonderful read and kudos to the author on such a solid first publication!

5.0 out of 5 stars Discover Author Suchi Kalra - Indian Chick Lit Author February 12, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
"My life, on the other hand, had just done a cartwheel and kicked me in the jaw." This memorable line comes from main character, Kairavi, who wakes up in a hospital wrapped in bandages and filled with worry and regret, her best friend, Baani by her side.

This sort of outcome typically happens in fiction (and in life) when you're fed up with your boyfriend, tired of work, and your best friend just mixed you a cocktail while suggesting you should both take a road trip to a beachside resort.

About that best friend. A nice contrast exists between the main character, Kairavi, and her best friend, Baani. Kairavi describes herself as shaky; a city slicker, lost in her own trappings, while her best friend is stable; a small-town girl who'd found her way in the big city.

Best friend Baani knows when to call it quits. Kairavi? Not so much . . .

Which is a good thing, because now scandalous events can happen to our main character while the contrasting qualities found in her best friend anchor the story in a more sensible reality, in a world where good girls don't fall off balconies. Add to this scenario a disdain for all things "Ricky" and you've got yourself a set-up. Ricky is Kairavi's ex-boyfriend. If it looks like Ricky - combed back hair gelled into place - then maybe it is Ricky . . .

Which brings us to an important inciting incident in the story: Kairavi sees something that leads to an over-consumption of Vodka and pot smoking. Presto! You've got trouble.

What I loved about this story was its length and fast-moving plot. I found it to be a very satisfying read with a likeable main character that despite the shortcomings that land her in heap of trouble, she's quite adorable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Happy fun read February 14, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Fun, fast-paced, engaging story of this easy to connect-with main character - Kay - partying types, who's declared done-with-men after a string of disastrous relationships.. her journey into potentially finding her self in a more meaningful relationship with the doctor who's not so much her type... some of the scenes had me laughing out loud in trains..
Hard to say that this a first novella by the author. Looking forward to many more great reads from her..

5.0 out of 5 stars Spicy, saucy and sexy! May 30, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I decided to share this review on my blog as I feel Indian Chick-lit Authors need as much as eye-balls as they can get.

Some of my favourite authors are Indian. Indian Chick-lit romance has sure come a long way!

Shuchi does full justice to the genre and comes out flying high.

Done With Men is spicy yet easy to read and kept me glued till the end.

In-fact it left me wanting for more stories about Kay and her friends and maybe there is another novel for Kay's friend.

I do not need to mention anything more about Dr. Vivian D’Mello other than the fact that I too wanted to be tended by the good doctor!

All the characters were so well fleshed out that I could swap them for a couple of friends that I have.

Shuchi has done full justice to the pulsating as well as peaceful Goa. The picturesque descriptions and romantic settings are just perfect.

'I sure want never to be "Done With Men"!' by [...]

I have been reading romance along with a whole lot of other genre's for a long-long time and feel that our Indian Author's have come of age and are doing equally well as the western counter-parts.

It is so much better to have the same intensity, romance and drama but with an Indian setting.

Indian authors are leading the race by a margin. Rest of the world watch out!

What did you think of the book?

I did this review in exchange for a copy of the novel. This is my own opinion.
