Aspheric lenses are expensive because they are specially ground to produce a sharp focus with high magnification right to the edges of the magnifying lens. An aspheric lens has one convex side (curved outward), and this convex side must be on top (on the side facing you) when you use the lens. When held properly at the optimal distance from the page or item being viewed (and with you looking straight down through the lens), this DONEGAN ASPHERIC 3X MAGNIFIER gives a beautiful, clear, distortion-free image with high magnification.

However, you will get an image without much distortion, and with only a little less magnification, when you use a high-quality standard magnifier, such as the Bausch and Lomb 2X Folding Lighted Handheld Magnifier or the Bausch and Lomb 2X Rectangular Handheld Magnifier. All three of these magnifiers, the Donegan and the two from Bausch & Lomb, have acrylic lenses. These acrylic lenses should be cleaned only with a soft cloth or washed in warm soapy water and dried with a soft cloth. Chemical or abrasive cleaners should never be used.

The 2" x 4" viewing field for this magnifier is large enough to make it useful for reading. However, if you want a magnifier mostly for reading, then a non-aspheric lens is probably a more economical and better choice. If you need extra magnification for reading, or if you plan to use your magnifier to scrutinize small items like stamps or coins, then this Donegan Aspheric 3X Magnifier is an excellent choice: it is a beautiful optical instrument.

This hand lens really magnifies X3. It's made of acrylic & is very light. The image is very clear, without distortion. This lens is so well-made that I do not see it any different from one made of glass. I use it to read small prints & found it after trying & failing with several cheap lenses. I also have a X2 lens from the same company. It's equally great. Highly recommended, well worth the price.

So you think all magnifiers are the same. Wrong! Not only does this have 4X power instead of most units 1.5 to 2.5, but there is almost no distortion edge to edge. It makes reading the small print very easy. If you need a magnifier, this is the one to get.

I bought this for my 95 year old Dad who LOVES to read his newspaper but he has been struggling a lot! The newspapers have reduced the size of the print so that I can hardly read it let alone Dad with advanced macular degeneration. I had gotten Dad a round magnifier that was very hard to use. This is a high quality easy to use magnifier that is a higher power than what we had. It is perfect for reading newsprint. It is also rectangular so you can read more at one time than the comparable circular lenses. It is easy to hold and easy to get used to. Dad LOVES it! Highly recommend it!

My ninety nine year old mother loves this magnifier. It is better than other ones that she has used. She has very low vision

I've been struggling for some time with an adequate 2x magnifier, but even the normal columns of some newspapers (e.g. WSJ) are difficult for me now. And both 5x pocket magnifiers I have are so distorted one way or another that ithey can only be used for postage-stamp sized material ("distorted" = either too small, or not aspheric, or both.)

This product is mid-range -- works great for most single-collumn newspaper and magazine, particularly on columns less than about 2.5" wide; but is a bit shy of the wider size columns more frequently appearing now (>3".) All that being said, it sure is the clearest and best thing I've tried (in order to compensate for my age-degenerating eyseight.) And although the lens material is plastic rather than glass, I can see no difference in quality.

The problem here is that thhis Aspheric technology cost (for the 3x model) is an order of magnitude more expensive than the cheaper spheric ones. I 'm afraid to ask whether or not a larger version of the aspheric product is available, and whether it is at least cheaper than a Tesla or Fisker electric automobile.

If I use only one eye, it works well havine a wide un distorted field of view, but icing both eyes, each eye looks through the transition area resulting in severe distortion os most of the visual field. My inexpensive spherical (rectangular) magnifier has much less distortion with two eyes.

This has greatly improved my 94-year-old mother's ability to read the newspaper. She has a bit of macular degeneration and this plus a strong light has made a real difference for her.
