I bought this headband magnifier to be able to work hands-free on electronic circuitry and small surface mount components. I thought I'd be able to use a small soldering iron while wearing the visor, but at the point of good focus there's only about 3 to 4 inches of clearance between the lenses and the work. It can still be done, but you have to be careful as you bring the iron in and out of the working view so you don't burn the visor or the lenses.

This magnifier is good overall. The fit is nice and snug and pretty comfortable to wear for extended time. The lenses are good quality, although if I had to buy another I'd get a lower magnification than this 3-1/2X. It's very hard to work with items because the focal length is under 4 inches. The 2.5X or 2.75X are probably better for getting more working distance. The knob-adjust headband is a nice feature for quickly adjusting to a snug fit, and the side knobs let you adjust the up/down swing very easily.

I also ordered the OptiLoupe 2.5X addon, but that thing is pretty useless. It's very hard to use and it has a narrow zone of vision.

Overall, the construction and quality of this headband visor is very good and it does what it claims.
It costs a bit more than most others, but it seems to be of very good construction.

Donegan 3 1/2X OptiVisor Headband Magnifier I purchased this product to work with building my PC. Not knowing that '3 1/2X' this magnification would only occur at 4 inches from the object, it does not meet my need for image clarity. To help other customers with my same perception, the description for these product items should clearly state the focal distance which will take effect during use.

I chose this magnifier because the lenses are glass, not plastic. The view is crystal clear and distortion free. The 10x lenses are powerful. If you only buy this to assist in removing splinters from fingers, it is worth it! The lenses are interchangable which is good, but the bad part is they are attached to the visor component by using two cheap split studs that are supposed to snap into the holes on the visor. Well, they do go into the holes, but they do not snap and therefore the lense has a tendency to fall out on one side or the other. If you push the visor up for normal view, the lense pop out on one side or both. I remedied this by putting a dot of superglue on the studs and permanently mounting the lense. I don't intend to buy any of the other lenses for the visor, since the 10x is what I need. The glue solved the problem. I wouldn't let this drawback stop me from purchasing the visor again, it's a minor issue. I recommend this optical visor.

This gadget performs as advertised. It magnifies and allows you to see objects in details that are normally very hard to see. However, in order to focus on the object, you have to keep the object close (6 inches). For lower power optivisor, the focal length is longer and you can keep the object farther from the eyes. It does allow me to wear my eye glasses, which is a plus. Beware that the lens are made of acrylic instead of glass, as mis-stated in the product description. Though the acrylic is lighter in weight, it is easier to scratch so I have to store it in the box to protect it.

I use these for electronics work, and they work well. Having binocular vision to do this work is much, much better peering through a single magnifying lens. I'll probably pick up a pair with longer focal length though, but 8" is usable. The focal length is measured from your eyeball, and the visor is a couple of inches of that, so the 10" or 14" version might work better if you are using tools on your work piece. The only gripe I have is that the headband doesn't breath very well, so there is usually sweat buildup when worn for a long period of time.

Pretty good item. Purchased the 2.5x magnification, which has a focal length of 8". So far so good, but I do wish the focal length was a little further as I dont think you can even get the full 8" away. Fairly comfortable. At this focal length you almost should have a built in light since you're so close. But, I do like the item and have no regrets of buying it. Thought adding the light will bring the price up quite a bit. Feels like quality construction as well.

Yeah, my eyes are definitely not what they used to be. This thing, is a god send when trying to fix something in a smallish working area..watches, ear buds..etc.

The only thing I was concerned about, and to be honest, still am not complete on, is which magnification is most desirable.

I bought the 1 3/4X mag but am curious as to the other ones..like, if I had a range of options, perhaps I'd get more use out of the entire product.

I guess the only way to know is to buy the one which gives the most magnification.

Btw, there's the Focal Length concept that I didn't truly understand when I bought this. Bottom line, the 1 3/4 power that I bought, works best when your physically within 14" of the watch or whatever you're working on. The other one that I considered, the 2 3/4 power requires you be within 6" to benefit from it's use.

You'd be surprised how close being within 14" feels..you're craning your neck right on top of the working area..I can only imagine what 6" requires...I guess I'll have to buy it and find out..lol. Which means, I'd get to judge for myself if the Lens changing method is, as many have intimated, poorly done.

But net net, I'm glad I bought this thing as even though it sits idle for extended periods, I'm really glad I have it when the need arises!

I tried several different styles and types of magnifier for soldering and general bench work, from lighted gooseneck magnifiers on a stand to jewelers loupes and found this headband style worked best for me. Since it moves with you, it is effortless to use, as opposed to a free standing or arm mounted magnifier which has to be adjusted and positioned. I found the 2x magnifier with a nominal 10" focal length to be too close for comfortable use. I bought the separate 1.75x lensDonegan Replacement Lens for Opti-Visor which has a considerably longer (14") focal length and found it to be a much more comfortable working distance with almost the same magnification. The lenses switch out easily with two screws. The 1.75x lenses are also available in the complete headband system DA-3Donegan OptiVISOR Headband Magnifier. The product description of the separate lenses says they are plastic, but in fact they are glass (I called Donegan to clarify this- the blue frame identifies them as glass- they do make a plastic version but the frame on them is not blue). I also bought the LED lighting system made to fit the Donegan Optivision which is also available from AmazonLed Light Attachment For Optivisor. It is expensive, but is a worthwhile addition to this very functional system. The Donegan Optivisor is excellent for magnifying detailed tasks, but be sure of which focal length is best for you before you buy (they come in six different magnifications and focal lengths) or you will end up buying new lenses for it as I did.

I've needed an item like this for the past year or so. I do component level, (chips, transistors, etc.), replacement and soldering on PCBs, when I'm out on service calls. The product itself is a well made, quality piece. Equally, the unit is comfortable to wear. I mainly bought it, due to its portability.

There's only one drawback, and it's not due to the product at all. The vendor, (along with most other vendors of this product), failed to list the focal length of each magnification level. So, I purchased a unit with about the highest magnification available. As I *now* look at the reviews for this product, I see one of the reviewers (see Lurfy's Ma's post) did list the focal lengths. However, I did not look at the reviews prior to my purchase. Hence, I had to buy a second unit with less magnification. A 1-3/4X is much better suited for my work, as I don't have to be "right on top" of my work.

Once again, this is a great, quality product. The magnification is just not suited for the kind of work I need it for.

For what it's worth, the Donegan LT-06 VisorLIGHT is a must have accessory, if you work in areas with low / limited lighting.
