to compare how the best singers can deliver their best (or not) in this opera I like so much! I'm sorry to say that as far as the title role for me the Callas performances are still without any chance of comparison and stay among the best fitting voice and role far away from other sopranos especially considering the recent ones that faced the role (I'd kill each of them!!!). Instead the greatest role of the opera from vocal point of view, Giovanna Seymour, here offers the unique possibility to listen to the performance of a too much underrated mezzo like Maria Luisa Nave who deliverd always her best in this role starting from the production of 70's with Olivero and Domingo. Unique chance also because of her very few official recordings exist.

Ces enregistrements "pirates" prouvent que l'après-Callas se portait bien dans les années 70. Sills, Sutherland, Caballé et Gencer, notamment, trouvèrent chez un Donizetti remis à la mode un terrain propice à leurs diverses ressources techniques et à leurs propres caractérisations du mélodrame romantique. Autant de divas, autant de diversité dans l'approche des personnages, et c'est avec une certaine curiosité que ce coffret nous montre une Suliotis et une Galvany "in directo" entourées de magnifiques partenaires.
On appréciera ce témoignage qui reflète un âge d'or aujourd'hui disparu, malgré quelques tentatives récentes assez bien réussies (chez Dynamic, surtout).
