This is a tremendous recording, one I am happy to have in my collection. Although I have two other recordings of the work, this one by far is the most complete and the cast first rate. I have always been perplexed as to how I found the vocal score years ago but this recording follows the score which I treasure almost note for note. I know the opera is a mish-mash of music, largely not composed by Donizetti but by a committee. Despite the dubious authenticity of the work, it is not to be dismissed so readily. This recording is top notch and I highly recommend it to all Donizetti fans as well as other opera aficionadtos, like myself. Thanks, Amazon, for making this work available!

I think this production fairly deserves its 5 stars.

"Il Duca d'Alba" was a project abandoned by Donizetti and completed by others (Matteo Salvi and Amilcare Ponchielli, among the rest). The current recording brochure provides deep research on all these historical details, as well as the opera analysis number-by-number. Being a mixed bag of music, some completely provided by Donizetti, some completely unprovided by Donizetti, and some provided by him partially (in most cases only the voice line) thus making it hard to feel and regard as an integrate whole, it hardly ranks as one of Donizetti's best, but still it's very enjoyable and gives a listener about 2 hours of a good music for an interesting drama of the elder and less famous sister of Verdi's "Vespri Siciliani" (the same plot line).

This recording was made from a live concert in 2007 with a good cast, conductor and the orchestra. Being left less enthusiastic than the other reviwer after several listenings, I would not call them "the first rate", but they are all truly good and provide very decent performance (especially for 2007 ;-)). The orchestra and the conductor do their professional best, if slightly uninspired. Inva Mula - the only female lead - has a very nice and gentle soprano, without a big volume, which suits her well for a lyric portrayal of Amelia. She sounds a little bit strained from time to time and just a little bit out of pitch a couple of times (could it be the recording problem??), but she manages her arias very well and they are virtually the best part or her work.
