Editorial Reviews

2014 release, the third album from the South African Rap/Rave duo. Die Antwoord's musical and visual style incorporates elements of zef culture, described as modern and trashy, appropriating out-of-date, discarded cultural elements.

4.0 out of 5 stars Chunky June 3, 2014
Format:Audio CD
Essentially, with every album Die Antwoord become more Die Antwoord. Whether that's a good thing or not is up to the individual listener. Donker Mag turns up everything present in Ten$ion even further: the beats are fatter and more self-assured, Ninja is even more brutally narcissistic, violent and sexual; Yo-Landi, with the odd exception, is even more creepily childlike and, frankly, used even more as some kind of super-sexualised decoration. Mercifully, the focus this time is less on their occasionally cringe-inducing euro-rave and more on thumping hip-hop beats. Oddly, one of the few exceptions, the frankly uninspired and predictable "Pitbull Terrier", effectively serves as the album's lead single given the almost year-long wait for the album after "Cookie Thumper!".

Highlights include "Happy Go Sucky F***y", which removes Yo-Landi from her increasingly standard naked alien anime character role and places her in far more pleasingly aggressive territory, "Raging Zef Boner", a bouncy bassfest made for car stereos with a chorus taken straight from Eminem's playbook, and "Rat Trap 666", a searingly bitter blast featuring a welcome turn from Cypress Hill's DJ Muggs.

There are a couple of unexpected, and pleasant, surprises: "Strunk" is a fascinatingly emotionally complex and gentle ballad surrounded in a haze of gentle guitars and mandolin without a single rapped line. Similarly, "Moon Love" features a shockingly tender conversation between Ninja and daughter Sixteen segueing into glitchy big beat, before the album gently bids goodbye with the organ-lead title track.

Not for everyone - but for those who appreciate the gloriously id-driven and trashy territory that Die Antwoord increasingly stake out for their own, Donker Mag will be no disappointment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing. June 2, 2014
By V.R.
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
The whole album is fun and feels a bit more like their previous projects to Die Antwoord. It is also a much smoother album compared to the first two (better recording studios, they are learning fast etc.).
My favorite tracks are: Ugly Boy, Zars, Girl I want 2 Eat U, Pitbull Terrier, Strunk, Rat Trap 666 (this track is out of control good), I Dont Dwank, Sex and Donker Mag. Moon Love is a remixed version of an older track (super sweet).
I highly recommend this album. Addictive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Evil Boy for Life !! June 12, 2014
Format:MP3 Music|Verified Purchase
If you like your novelty rave rap group to be freakish and humorous then you have come to the right place. I fell in love with The Answer when Tension came out and bought $0$ as well. With the new insane video for PitBull Terrior out I was thinking this would be reflective of that song. It is not at all. Production budget is bigger and it isnt a bad thing like some bands that sounded better lofi then hifi. This is a ninja heavy record so if you want more Yolandi and less Ninja get Tension as well as this one. Strunk is a really interesting song for them and is actually melodic and funny as usual. I am headed out tonight in Charlotte NC to see them live tonight. I am really excited to see the craziness in person and experience the zefness. If i rated the three records I would have to say Tension and Donker Mag are neck in neck at the line for me. I suggest buying all three and also trying to dress like them the best you can. I do love some Die Antwoord it is entertaining and danceable which is the lighthearted rediculousness I need in my mix. BTW Yolandi looks twelve sometimes but is 30 throwing that out there in case you feel strange.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ultimately, DISAPPOINTING June 10, 2014

FIrst, I am a huge fan of Die Antwoord. Love getting my inner Zef on, but this new CD is off. I cannot stand the lame dialogue-type interludes. I know they've done this before, but there are too many, and too long. Give us more music! The CD is only 50 minutes! Yes, there are a few Zef tracks, with monster beats, but is this the best next-level s*** they can produce? The album also has too much soft-core stuff. My opinion. If you are raving to this, more power to ya. Peace.

3.0 out of 5 stars Moon Love was a bad choice October 9, 2014
Format:Audio CD
There are a few tracks worthy of praise on this album... and some exceptions.

But, if they decide to "recycle" tracks from the Max Normal days, Moon Love was a bad choice.
If the creativity well has run dry, put "Angel Claw" on the album.

The little voice-only interludes have to go. Nobody wants to hear such useless "FILLER" nonsense.

Commit to an actual album of new material. Take your Zef time if necessary, but no more recycling, or shit tracks of dumb conversation.

Die Antwoord has a fan base... give them your best!

Maybe I just need to listen to it more, and maybe my hopes were higher than they should have been, but I'm not getting into this album. Only 3 songs that I could listen to more than once (Cookie Thumper, Ugly Boys, and Strunk)...nothing else has hooked me yet. I mean that's better than alot of albums these days but with the first 2.....I've played them to death. Honestly I didn't fall in love with Ten$ion right away so I'm gonna give it some time then re-evaluate my review.
