This review is from: Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast (Video Game)
Back when Nintendo made the Gamecube, there have been a lot of games that relied on the pounding of specialty bongos, and those were made for Donkey Kong. With games like Donkey Konga and its sequel, and the thrill of action from beating up villians and foe kongs from the challenging Donkey Kong Jungle Beat, we've been pounding back into Donkey Kong and his heart all over again. But, now he has made his debut with a new game onto the Wii, that captures the need for jungle speed. This hasn't been the only time Donkey Kong has made it into the racing era. While he made before from being a character on the Mario kart franchise for years, this one takes a beating and keeps on playing for the Wii.
Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast for the Nintendo Wii, brings Donkey Kong into a new generation of pounding action. The gameplay of course takes the bongo control gameplay, as you use your Wii remote and nunchuck controller to pound and steer Donkey Kong, and his family friends Diddy, Dixie, Tiny Kong, and his foes the Kremlins, those vulgar alligators from the Donkey Kong Country series, through 16 different courses. The graphics look beautiful as you go through courses ranging from the snowy mountains, to the sunny streams. As you race, you try to add up bananas to boost your speed, with trilling wild moves, and hover through wicked stunts. There are also great shortcuts to uncover that take full action of the Wii controllers, with Mine Carts, animal friends, and barrel cannons which blast you into orbit. There are also a few extras items here that range from extra bananas, to whirlwinds that snatch bananas from other racers as you race your way through the game. All in all, Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast was originally set to be made for the Gamecube, but does a much better job as a title on the Nintendo Wii. While there are other more well-profiled racing titles coming for the Wii like the upcoming Mario Kart Wii and Need For Speed: Prostreet, and more high-profiled games like Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, Donkey Kong: Barrel Blast is a fun and thrilling title that brings in the fun well as a great racing title. I really recommend this as a great buy for any Wii owner. Graphics: B+ Sound: B Control: B Fun & Enjoyment: B 1/2+ for solo players; A- for multiplayers Overall: B+

This game is not meant for hardcore racing fans of GT and Dirt.
Excellent game for children and family. Controls work very well. This game is very very enjoyable. Easy to pick up and play. As with every other game from Nintendo there is lot of content to go around. Iam seeing this game on sale most of the times, pick it up you wont go wrong. Multi-player/party mode is one of the main strengths of this game.

I am somewhat stunned at the high-rated reviews for this game. On most technical levels this game is fine -- and typical of the wii. However the gameplay is morbidly bad. So bad that all of people that I personally know to have played this game hated it almost immediately.
I love Mario Kart, but had played it to a point that it wasn't as entertaining anymore. This game -- at its core -- is also a racing game made by Nintendo, so I thought it might be an interesting supplement to Mario Kart. In this game, you fly a weird bongo contraption by banging on the drums. This is done by shaking your wii remote and nunchuck. If you shake them both, you accelerate. If you lift them up, you jump. If you shake just one of them, you turn in the opposite direction. If this preposterous novelty doesn't immediately dissuade you from playing the game, consider this... you have to constantly shake your controls the entire time you play this game. It requires more coordination and effort than other racing games -- and you will be punished for this effort with much less control over your "vehicle" than in a game that uses a more traditional set of controls. If you are still interested, I highly recommend that you rent it at Blockbuster (or some other rental service) before you buy it. You'll know, quickly, whether this game is your thing or not. I would guess that most people will hate it, and those that like it will tire of its novelty soon enough and seek out a better racing game.
