Donkey Rhubarb, February 6, 2005
This review is from: Donkey Rhubarb (Audio CD)
This is an excellent 4 track EP released after I Care Because You Do. As the art suggests, the music here has a lot in common with the stuff heard on I Care, including a version of "Icct Hedral" recorded using an actual orchestra courtesy of Phillip Glass.
1) Donkey Rhubarb
Lighthearted, playful melodies over a pounding beat. 5/5
2) Vaz Deferenz
Interesting name... this track could be labeled experimental, perhaps in the same vein as On's "73 Yips". Like "73 Yips" the enjoyment here is derived from the subtle rising intensity of the beat as the song progresses. Not for those easily annoyed by repetitive abrasive music. 5/5
3) Icct Hedral (Phillip Glass Orchestration)
I may prefer the cut we got on I Care a little more, but this is definitely an interesting variation of a great song, and different enough that one cannot easily be called superior over the other. Unlike Aphex Twin remixes, though, this DOES have a lot in common with the original track; this is not a remix rather than a re-recording using an orchestra. 5/5
4) Pancake Lizard
My favorite track here. If you liked the darker songs on I Care Because You Do - "Icct Hedral" "Wet Tip Hen Ax" "Next Heap With" - than this song is for you, because "Pancake Lizard" follows suit in extremely satisfying form. 5/5
The four tracks total in at around 24:37.
