Editorial Reviews

First staged in Naples in 1819, Rossini' opera La donna del lago is based on Walter Scott' romantic poem The Lady of the Lake, setting a precedent for later composers, who also drew on Scott for their plots. Set in exotic 16th-century Scotland, the opera

I'd like to break away from the qualifying and erudition for a moment and shout out, "THIS IS WHAT OPERA IS ALL ABOUT!". What a sensational performance! It is thrilling beyond all my expectations. It begins simply, almost as oratorio and never stops building, becoming more and more startling and melodic every step of the way - a great piece of theatre.

Maestro Zedda has conducted with grand passion, nuance and sense for tempi. He is a controlled wild man, wonderful with heart. The cast is nearly impossible for me to even imagine assembling today. Maxim Mirinov is outrageously fine, truly exciting. The mezzo sopranos, Sonia Ganassi and Marianna Pizzolato are far more than generic, they are exemplary. They sing with acumen, heart and humanity - no trick-voiced mezzos here. Olga Peretyatko sings beautifully, as does the rest of the cast, Mr. Gierlach, Mr. Von Bothmer and Mr. Cifolelli. They seems to delight in ensemble work as much as in their own particular star-turns. I love it, when a work lives as this does.

The sound of this live performance is remarkably fine - better than many studio recordings. The SWR Radio Orchestra and the Prague Chamber Choir are phenomenal. No libretto, (that can be had on the 'Net) but, what a great value.

I am writing this review for the purpose of giving it another much-deserved all star rating. This performance is marvelous; the best on disc. Altho the singers are deeply satisfying, indeed thrilling, I think that Zedda is the prime reason for the success of this performance. His performance from Liege, 2003, along with this one, proves to me that he is the best conductor of this apparently tricky score. No one else makes it so exciting. The sound is wonderful. I recommend it without reservation.

La Donna Del Lago, in my opinion is the most lovely and melodic of all of Rossini's opera seria. The cast assembled for this 2006 live performance would be difficult to surpass. Under esteemed Rossini scholar and conducto Alberto Zedda the cast does wonderfully well. Sonia Ganassi as "La Donna" is vocally incredible( I have been a long time fan of hers :see her on DVD in Maria Stuarda, gentle reader!) and interpretively excellent. A young Maxim Miranov (see him in either La Cenerentola or L'Italiana in Algerie on DVD) is a coloratura delight. I had not heard Ferdinand Von Botha before (he sings the tenor lead in Alzira on C Major's Tutto Verdi release of that opera) but what a voice! And his role goes into the stratosphere with no sign of strain!

This is as close to perfection as recorded opera gets, friends. Since it arrived here, it has had more play time than any other opera.
