5.0 out of 5 stars A great album
I am a big fan of Donna Summer, and have been for many years, as I guess many people are. Unlike some, I like this album. I really like the mix of songs included on this album, which is very much a window into life and soul. It's all here - love and loss, wanting to be your own person, and wanting recognition as a human being. Personally, I think that this is a great...

3.0 out of 5 stars I Don't Understand Why This Was Made?
Like other reviewers, this is NOT a great hit colllection. Here's why: I will highlight her previous hit collections.
Buy:
1. On The Radio - Greatest Hits 1&2 -- If you only like her 70's music.

2. The Anthology Collection - If you want to dig deeper beyond a hits collection with 2 CDs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great album, December 9, 2010
This review is from: Donna Summer - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I am a big fan of Donna Summer, and have been for many years, as I guess many people are. Unlike some, I like this album. I really like the mix of songs included on this album, which is very much a window into life and soul. It's all here - love and loss, wanting to be your own person, and wanting recognition as a human being. Personally, I think that this is a great album. Yeah, if you already have an anthology of her complete works, then this will be redundant - period - full stop. But, nonetheless it's a great album, and if you don't have that anthology I think you'll really like it, like I do.

5.0 out of 5 stars Donna Summer: GREATEST HITS (1998), November 18, 2006
This review is from: Donna Summer - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
In September of 1998, Donna Summer released her twenty-fourth album entitled GREATEST HITS, just keeping it simply, I guess. This greatest hits album is very good, but I wish more hits were included.

LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (Single Version)
Original version from the album LOVE TO LOVE YOU BABY (1975). Awesome song.

COULD IT BE MAGIC (Single Version)
Original version from the album A LOVE TRILOGY (1976). Awesome. I know that Barry Manilow is very proud of Donna's cover.

I FEEL LOVE (Single Version)
Original version from the album I REMEMBER YESTERDAY (1977). Great song.

LAST DANCE
From the original motion picture & motion picture soundtrack THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY (1978). Still a classic.

HOT STUFF
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Great song.

BAD GIRLS
From the album BAD GIRLS (1979). Great song.

ON THE RADIO
From the album ON THE RADIO: GREATEST HITS VOLUMES I & II (1979). Awesome.

THE WANDERER
From the album THE WANDERER (1980). An awesome song.

LOVE IS IN CONTROL (FINGER ON THE TRIGGER)
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Amazing.

STATE OF INDEPENDENCE
From the album DONNA SUMMER (1982). Amazing.

SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY
From the album SHE WORKS HARD FOR THE MONEY (1983). Great song.

THIS TIME I KNOW IT'S FOR REAL
From the album ANOTHER PLACE AND TIME (1989). A song I will never, ever get tired of.

This is a great album, but I do wish that Donna would have included "Try Me, I Know We Can Make It", "Spring Affair", "Love's Unkind", "Once Upon A Time", "I Love You", "Rumour Has It", "MacArthur Park", "Heaven Knows", "Dim All The Lights", "Sunset People", "Our Love", "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)" (performed by Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer), "Cold Love", "Unconditional Love" (performed by Donna Summer & Musical Youth)", "There Goes My Baby", "Supernatural Love", "All Systems Go", "I Don't Wanna Get Hurt", & "Love's Abou To Change My Heart". But, this is still an album that belongs in your Donna Summer collection.

3.0 out of 5 stars I Don't Understand Why This Was Made?, September 2, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Donna Summer - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Like other reviewers, this is NOT a great hit colllection. Here's why: I will highlight her previous hit collections.
Buy:
1. On The Radio - Greatest Hits 1&2 -- If you only like her 70's music.

2. The Anthology Collection - If you want to dig deeper beyond a hits collection with 2 CDs.

3. Endless Summer - If you want THE major highlights spanning her entire collection up to 1994 including 80s tracks that obviously you won't have on On The Radio.

You can buy any of these 3 and not be disappointed. Anything else after that is UNNECESSARY unless you have money to splurge or Donna gets back on Top 40 radio (which I always hope for:)) Donna is certainly capable of a few more hits even though she is 54 years old.

1.0 out of 5 stars "Enough Is Enough" of Recycled Summer Hits!, September 11, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Donna Summer - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
A more devoted Summer fan than I, there could not be. But let's face it... how many Greatest Hits Collections does one artist need - and all from the same label? From Donna's Greatest Hits/On The Radio double lp to the double disk Anthology and the Endless Summer Collection (to name only a few), Mercury/Polygram needs to know when to say ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. No matter how you package it... it's still the same old songs - as great as they may be. The fans aren't that gullable.

The marketing group at the label really need to stop looking at making a few quick bucks and listen to what the fans are begging for. If increased sales is what they're looking for, why not try something NEW? The Summer archives are packed with Unreleased Tracks(Tearin Down The Walls), B-Sides(Face The Music), Live Tracks and the long sought after 12" mixes of Dinner With Gershwin, All Systems Go, and all the Extended Mixes from the Stock Aitken Waterman "APAT" penned album. How about some '98 Remixes - other labels have done it with both Blondie and Diana Ross.

Donna proves time and time again that she hasn't lost her touch with Billboards 1994 #1 Dance Hit "Melody Of Love" or this years Grammy Winner "Carry On".

Autumn may be rapidly approaching... but SUMMER is here to stay. Send a message to the record company - give this one a PASS.

1.0 out of 5 stars Why bother??, May 18, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Donna Summer - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
The ONLY reason to buy this one is if you are a new fan of Donna Summer's work...and I don't know how any fresh fans can be recruited, given the lack of new material since a Christmas album released years & years ago. This CD contains no suprises, no "bonus" releases, no hard-to-find tracks. I have NO idea why this was released, given the glut of Donna Summer greatest hits packages already on the market.

Please, record company guys, can we try something new for a change?

1.0 out of 5 stars Stop the Greatest Hits, PLEASE!!, March 12, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Donna Summer - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
I did not buy this album because I already have every song on it. I bought Donna Summer's "On the Radio", then I bought the double disk "Anthology"--only because it had a more extensive collection of her hits. But honestly, what is the point of continually releasing the same old songs over and over again as a greatest hits package? How many copies of these songs do Donna Summer fans need--or want? And furthermore, does the record company REALLY think that fans are going to continue to spend money on the same songs over and over again? I love Donna Summer and am waiting breathlessly for a new album. But, I refuse to buy another greatest hits album of hers. I didn't buy "Endless Summer" and I am not going to buy this new one, either. I was absolutely shocked when I saw this in a record store! The songs on this album would normally give the CD 5 stars, but I give it 1 star because it is old news that keeps getting rehashed over and over again. I do agree that if a record company is going to be bold enough to release ANOTHER Donna Summer greatest hits, then they should AT LEAST make it a remix album.

5.0 out of 5 stars This CD is great., December 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Donna Summer - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
All the songs are great. It would be better if they had made HOUSE MIXES of the songs. I will be very happy when she does a remix CD of songs from her last 5 CD's; not counting all the greatest hits. I am a big fan of Donna's but I can't continue to buy the same songs with the same versions over and over. Lets make some HOUSE MIXES of the songs. I still love you Donna.

I have to agree with the other reviews I have read...there's no point in buying this CD - if you are a fan like me...you already have all of this material AND MORE. Her last CD of original material "Crayons," was excellent in every way and completely up to the standards we've all come to expect from this extraordinary pop sensation! So, I'll just wait around for something new again...and hope that it comes along soon because like CHER, Donna most definitely deserves that last "over the top" pop/dance hit song and TOUR...She deserves it and WE deserve it...so Donna, YOU GO GIRL!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars A good album, with lots of Donna Summer's best, April 6, 2011
This review is from: Donna Summer - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Ah, this takes me back - back to the 1970s and disco music. But, the Bee Gees, this aint! Back then, Donna Summer was the queen of hot, and her music sounded great any time, any where. I often thought that I Feel Love was the ultimate cruising tune.

Anyway, this is a pretty good album. Yeah, as with many older musicians, the studios keep coming out with "new" albums that are just remixes of the tunes that are already out there, and this album is one of those. In spite of that, though, it is a good album, with lots of Donna Summer's best, and I highly recommend it.
