"Greatest Hits" of Donny and Marie? Not even close.,
This review is from: Donny & Marie Osmond - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
As a long time fan of Donny and Marie (my first, official concert was them and the Osmond Brothers in 1978), I saw the cover and knew it was a photo from the back cover of my favorite 1976 Donny and Marie LP "Donny and Marie New Season." I thought, "Great! There will be some of my favorite songs on there from that LP and the TV show." I was completely wrong. (Note: The clothes on the cover of this CD are also the same ones found on the Donny and Marie dolls that were sold in the 1970s.)There are certain songs that fans of the TV series would remember. Those songs are not found on this CD. Why? Who put this CD together to label it "their greatest hits" when there are more songs out there by Donny and Marie that are more classic than this and would be considered their greatest hits. Because they had a variety show for so long, there are some songs that fans would remember more. The songs that should be on this CD that weren't: "May Tomorrow Be a Perfect Day" (closed the TV show every week) My favorite songs on this CD are: I hope that in the future, there will be a follow up to this CD with songs that all fans and viewers will remember. For now, Donny and Marie fans will have to use this CD as a substitution.

Great music scores by the talented siblings!!,

I think that Donny and Marie are great singing together. The music's for the whole family! My favourite is the disco flavoured "On the Shelf"(from their first and only motion picture "Goin' Coconuts!"). I also really like "'Aint Nothing Like the Real Thing", "The Umbrella Song", "Morning Side of the Mountain", I'm Leaving it (All Up) To You" and just about the rest of the tracks! They had their own variety show "The Donny and Marie Show"(1976-78) and years later reunited to host their own talk show. They're still going strong indeed!

Greatest Hits but no Best Of...,
By Alan Russo (Cambridge, MA USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Donny & Marie Osmond - Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
This compilation is their greatest hits minus their top 40 hit Soul & Inspiration. It also lacks some of their best known material such as A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock N' Roll and their closing show theme May Tomorrow Be A Perfect Day. Here's my version of their Greatest Hits: I'm Leaving It All Up To You, Morning Side Of The Mountain, It Takes Two, Make The World Go Away, Together, Deep Purple, A Little Bit Country..., Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing, Soul & Inspiration, Winning Combination, Baby I'm Sold On You, On The Shelf, Certified Honey, May Tomorow Be A Perfect Day. Am I asking for TOO MUCH?

Took me down memory lane,

I have been a fan of Donny & Marie's since I was a little girl and listening to this CD brought me back to that time when I'd lay on the bed and listen to "I'm Leaving It All Up To You" over and over again, driving my family crazy. It brought back some great memories. Now as an adult listening to these songs I can see how well put together they were and how wonderful this brother and sister sang together. They were and still are great singers. I say to anyone that grew up in the 1970's great this CD for your collection. You will love it and it will take you down memory lane.

Curb Records has been pumping out Osmond family CD's for a long time now and has yet to get it totally right. In this budget piece of only ten tracks, are the supposed greatest hits of Donny and Marie as a duo. Even with only ten tracks, seeing as they had a total of seven top-100 charting singles, there is certainly room to include all those songs. One of them, their version of "Soul And Inspriration", has been left off in favor of a b-side. Granted, most of their hits are here but why not all of them?
Repertoire considerations aside, the sound quality here is adequate with all tracks in stereo and the liner notes contain a brief musical history on these Osmond siblings. For its purpose, a budget collection of most of their singles, this fits the bill but for a few dollars more you can get better Donny and Marie collections elsewhere.

Love the harmony,

I was thrilled to find that at least one of their albums was made into a CD. These songs take me back to when I was younger and a BIG fan. The simple harmony that they used made their songs even more enjoyable. I probably learned how to sing harmony by listening to their albums over and over again. They helped to shape my love of music. A love that has turned into a career as a music teacher. I will be playing this album for many years to come!

Say what you want about them, but WHAT TALENT!,

Donny & Marie may not be "cool". They may even be square. But if that's the case, give me more square. The harmony, range, and clean fun of "Deep Purple", "Morning Side of the Mountain", and "On the Shelf" show them to be of amazing talent. Here's hoping for more great things in the future for them both.

good--as far as it goes, that is (three and one-half stars),

Donny & Marie Osmond - Greatest Hits goes only part of the way when it aims to be a "greatest hits" album. Yes, what we do get here is choice material; but oh, wow, did they ever leave out so much on this CD! On the other hand, the sound quality is great and the artwork is nicely done. This works best as a basic, introductory CD to what Donny and Marie Osmond could do when they worked together at their very best.
"I'm Leaving It All Up To You" is a great tune and the melody is both pretty and catchy. The lyrics are that of a true blue love song and Donny with Marie make this song so very special with their harmonizing and their singing is great! They never hit a superfluous note and the musical arrangement is very well done. In addition, "Morning Side Of The Mountain" is a tune I really like and I think you'll like it, too. "Deep Purple" is probably my very favorite song on this album; Donny and Marie Osmond do this great justice as they sing this better than anyone else ever could! The musical arrangement works to bolster the number and the overall effect is beautiful, to say the least. "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" is another song that Donny and Marie ace seemingly effortlessly. Their unique talents make it look so easy even when we know this quality performance is actually very challenging and professional. "Take Me Back Again" charms me with its natural beauty; Donny and Marie sing this to perfection and beyond! "Take Me Back Again" is easily a major highlight of this CD and I don't know that it is remembered as well as some of the other songs on this CD--and that's a shame. "Everything Good Reminds Me Of You" stands out as a fine example of what Donny and Marie could do when they teamed up to make one of the best love songs I've heard in a while; Donny and Marie are brilliant on this tune and they make this twinkle and shine. In addition, the album ends with Donny and Marie Osmond singing "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock and Roll." "A Little Bit Country, A Little Bit Rock and Roll" is a cute, peppy little number that ends the CD on a good note (no pun intended). Overall, Donny & Marie Osmond - Greatest Hits is very good--but only as far as it goes. This really should have been a much longer album or even a two CD release; I can't understand what possessed the record label to put out such a truncated CD. This is best only as a brief introduction to the artistry of Donny and Marie Osmond when they perform together; and more serious fans should also consider other CDs by Donny and Marie Osmond that are available for sale on this website.
