This was a well-written book that gives the reader a good sense of what Donovan McNabb is all about!, December 13, 2009
This review is from: Donovan McNabb (Football Heroes Making a Difference) (Library Binding)
When Donovan McNabb was a boy, he was a "big sports fan." He played baseball and basketball but when he asked his mom if he could play football she thought it was "too dangerous." Later she relented and he quickly absorbed the game and started to blossom. By the time he got into high school at Mr. Caramel, he soon became their star quarterback. He not only had brains, he had brawn and colleges were "lining up to recruit him." Donovan could probably pick and choose where he wanted to go, but he decided on Syracuse. He quickly became a team leader and as Coach Paul Pasqualoni later said, "he'd go on to be a great pro." It wasn't a prediction that was very far off the mark!
When he was ready for the pros, he anxiously awaited the results of the NFL draft. He was thrilled when he learned that the Philadelphia Eagles had chosen him, but was also stunned by the booing. The Philly fans were anxious to see Ricky Williams on the team. McNabb knew he had to deliver. He proved them wrong because "no other Eagles quarterback had won his first start as a rookie in 25 years." Donovan not only had brains and brawn, he was also very kindhearted and generous. In 2000 he created "the Donovan McNabb Foundation" to raise money for the American Diabetes Association. He also used some of the money raised by his foundation to sponsor the Donovan McNabb Camp where children with diabetes could go to camp.
This was a well-written book that gives the reader a good sense of what Donovan McNabb is all about. I liked the set up with numerous full color illustrations with small sidebars that offer up small vignettes about his life and career. There are other books for the older reader, but this biography is just perfect for its intended audience, ages nine to twelve. In the back of the book is an index, a glossary, some additional highlights about Donovan, and additional recommended book and website resources (through the Bearport site). This is one book in the series, "Football Heroes: Making a Difference."
