Biography

Upon his emergence during the mid-'60s, Donovan was anointed "Britain's answer to Bob Dylan," a facile but largely unfounded comparison which compromised the Scottish folk-pop troubadour's own unique vision. Donovan Leitch struggled to escape the frequent comparisons which tagged him as Britain's Bob Dylan, though he did seem to be happier, and perhaps somewhat prettier, than his US counterpart.

Donovan was born in Scotland, but moved to England when he was ten. When he left school he eschewed art college and chose instead to travel, busk and play in clubs during the emerging British folk scene. In 1964, at the age of 18, he was offered his first recording contract. He recorded several of the songs he had been writing including his first hit, "Catch the Wind".
