3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing finale
I thoroughly enjoyed the first three books of this series. I fell in love with the characters in Santa Rosa, and I was disappointed to see that they are hardly mentioned in this book. Although having Marcail move to a different city is a good way to show her independent spirit, I would have rather have read about the characters I became familiar with, instead of new...

5.0 out of 5 stars Good finale to the series., November 19, 2001

Donovan's daughter details Marcail, the youngest Donovan, move to a new town away from family to be a teacher. Marcail meets the town doctor, who is a wonderful Christian man, but she doesn't trust doctors. This book is a nice finish to the series. My favorite in the series is "Sean Donovan" but this book is well worth the read. The romance is developed nicely and Lori Wick has a wonderful way of writing books that you can't put down! Another good read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Donovan's Daughter, February 5, 2001

This book was just as wonderful as the first three of this 4 part series. Each of 'The Californians' books made me cry and feel a part of the family and all the experiences they went through. Great historical romance story of a family that puts God first no mater what happens.

I thoroughly enjoyed the first three books of this series. I fell in love with the characters in Santa Rosa, and I was disappointed to see that they are hardly mentioned in this book. Although having Marcail move to a different city is a good way to show her independent spirit, I would have rather have read about the characters I became familiar with, instead of new ones like Allie and her family, who weren't developed at all. This book and Pretense are the only Wick books that have ever disappointed me, and I have read nearly all. She will continue to be one of my favorite authors, and I can't wait for her next book!

5.0 out of 5 stars Marcail grows up and becomes independent, April 13, 1999
I've just finished this sweet book about growing up, accomplishing goals, learning to communicate and facing childhood fears. Donovan's daughter was a wonderful conclusion to the Californian series. I'm glad I was able to experience the Donovan family and their struggles and joys.

Lori Wick was really the first Christian author of fiction that I read. I've read all of her books, up through the English Garden series. Then I stopped (I couldn't deal with her anymore). I started reading her in my teens and I'm in my 30s now, so it's been awhile. But I remembered how I loved her books in the past, so I just reread this series. What I've noticed (which I didn't notice as a teenager because I didn't know better) is that Wick has a great plot - but doesn't write well. Her characters come off as so saccharine that they are kind of unbelievable. The thing is, I like her stories. I just have to stop and gag or roll my eyes every once in a while. And although it's very nice that she does it, I do wish that Lori would be a little bit more realistic and not have everyone be saved/married by the end of the book or the end of the series. It's not realistic or necessary. I realize we read fiction to escape sometimes, but I don't feel like I connect with these Christians, because they don't seem like real people, and their lives are too neat and tidy by the end of the story or the end of the series. It's like they turn into SuperChristian after they get saved.

Donovan's Daughter has a great plot - you just knew that sometime Marcail was going to have to deal with her issues with doctors. It does seem kind of unbelievable that she would agree to marry Alex, though, just because she said she was going to teach and no one was going to make her give up! She could have left town and been done with the whole thing. However, if Lori had developed a teensy bit more relationship between Alex and Marcail before the incident happened, then it might have been more convincing. Their story is very cute, though. And I have to restate that I do like the series (and most of Lori's books) for the storyline. It's worth a read, just don't expect great writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Upon arrival marriage was the last thing on Marcail's mind,, April 16, 2004
By
but when caught in a snow storm she is forced to stay overnight with Dr. Alex Montgomery, her reputation is put on the line.
Marcail agrees to the marriage to save her teaching career, but her great fear of doctors is keeping her marriage from going anywhere.
When Marcail takes a serious fall and neglects to tell Alex, it further drives them apart. One day, with the help of Marcail's brother-in-law Riggs, they start to talk to each other about their problems, and Marcail finally realizes her true feelings for Alex.
This book concludes the California series and does so incredibly well. This book is exceptional, and I couldn't put it down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Excellent book by Lori WIck, December 21, 2003

When Marcail accepts a teaching position in a small town, she doesn't expect to meet her future husband, but that she does.
When Marcail and the town's doctor are caught in a snow storm, Marcail either has to leave town or marry the good docter, much to the doctor's pleasure she chooses the latter, even though Marcail has a great fear of doctor's.
