5.0 out of 5 stars witty, literate & downright amusing, October 16, 2002

The smile never left my face and my head nodded unconciously as I read and enjoyed the book. I've given it as Christmas and birthday presents and it has always been received with glee and pleasure. I highly recommend it for any punster aficionado.

5.0 out of 5 stars wonderful for anyone who likes clever humor, January 27, 1997

I am a person who is always in search of that new joke, that clever new quip, that new piece of witty wordplay. Coming across Mr. Brett's book of puns has proven a great addition to my informal comic repetoire, because he has included in his book some of the funniest (and, as are all good puns, most groan-inducing) puns I've ever seen. It's a hilarious book thanks to Mr. Brett's creative stories which he builds around his one-liner ending. "Don't Book a Judge" is well worth anyone's time and money, I think. In these days when wit seems to be fast vanishing from America, more works like those of Mr. Brett's are sorely needed.

5.0 out of 5 stars For those who love words and puns--this book is incredible, August 6, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Don't Book a Judge by His Cover: A Collection of the World's Most Outrageous Puns (Paperback)
I've read this book--three times. I practically laughed my soul out of my head. This is a collection of some incredible twists on words, plays on words, and "groaners." Anybody who loves to laugh, anyone who loves the English language, anyone who appreciates "cunning linguistics," will revel in these stories. The book is a collection of some forty-five or fifty stories, short, short stories each leading up to an incredible PUNchline. Some of the stories are old classics, but classics that have been more than simply dusted off and brought before the reader; they have been refined under the superb style of the author. These puns have been traveling the humor circuit for years, but Brett's inimitable style makes them sound new. Ohers are new, others are original. The reader is certain to meet some old favorites here as well make some new friends among the jokes and puns. Yes, the book is funny, but it is all puns--"punny"--and they don't just quit. Within this collection, you will meet the heavenly angel who "left his harp in Sam Clam's Disco," the English university students who, having accosted a group of ladies of the evening one day on campus, suggested they comprised a "jamb of tarts," or a "flourish of strumpets," or an "essay of Trollops," or an "anthology of prose." I won't go on--these lines are just a small sampling of what you can expect from Brett's hilarious collection. Truly, "Don't Book a Judge by his Cover: A Collection of the World's Most Outrageous Puns" is not to be judged by its cover; it must be judged by its intelligent, at times sophisticated, but always riotous contents.
