Editorial Reviews

From the Author

When asked by the London producer to adapt this very successful French comedy by the author of 'Boeing Boeing' I said yes, but I would need a fairly free hand since many of the continental situations and mannerisms wouldn't ring true for British audiences. I commenced with the great opening crisis situation (the essential ingredient for all comedies) and then more or less let the piece take its course. A play has never written itself so quickly and so breathlessly!

In this farce about extra marital affairs, mistaken identities, and the consequences of both, Robin Hawdon creates one of the funniest plays I've read in a long time.
Bernard is married to Jaquelin but having an affair with Suzanne, a model. Jaquelin is having an affair with Robert, who is Bernard's best friend. Jacky is supposed to go to her mother's while Bernard has Suzanne over along with Robert for an aliby. When Jacky finds out Robert is coming for the weekend, she cancels. Bernard cons Robert into pretending Suzanne is his girlfriend, only Bernard has ordered a cook named Suzette, who Robert mistakes for the model Suzanne. Now with Robert, Bernard, both Suzies and Jaquelin totally confused, the lies just get bigger and bigger with no end in sight.
But that also goes for the laughter. With brillaint writing by Hawdon, this play will make you laugh out loud after the hundredth time you've read it. I highly recomend this for performance as well as just reading pleasure. You won't find much better.

"Don't Dress for Dinner" is an absolutely hysterical farce written by Marc Camoletti and adapted for the British stage by Robin Hawdon. I was involved with a production of this show at our local theatre, and it was an absolute delight to watch! It's a fun read, too!

It should be known that the other reviewer in this topic who Reviewed Don't Dress for Dinner is referring to a very funny play by Marc Camoletti, not by Robin Hawdin. I have not read this particular play, so I have no input on its merits, but I don't want others to be misled.
