Book Description

E. J. Pugh Mysteries July 2000

There is no love lost between novelist/sometime sleuth E.J. Pugh and her three sisters: four high-strung Texas redheads who have made sibling rivalry an art form. In an attempt to ease their stretched-thin family ties, the ladies and their respective mates have rented a vacation home together on the Caribbean island of St. John. But reconciliation must take a back seat to crim detection when a waterlogged corpse is discovered clogging up the cistern of their stunning beachfront house.

The body belongs to a former employee of the dentist husband of sister Liz, which leads the local police captain to surmise that the killer is a member of the clan--especially after an exploding count up from one. E.J., however, is not convinced. And, to the chagrin of her loving, long-suffering hubby, Willis, she's determined to salvage what's left of their vacation by exposing whomever is rapidly turning a family gathering into a wake in paradise.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Edgar Award-nominated Cooper's latest E.J. Pugh mystery (after Not in My Backyard), the sometime sleuth, her three sisters and their mates reluctantly come together for a family vacation in the Caribbean. E.J. has an unlucky knack for finding dead bodies, so it is no great shock when one is discovered in the family's beachfront house. Her sister Liz recognizes the deceased as her husband's new receptionist, and the stress of being murder suspects soon brings the siblings' strained relations to the breaking point. Ultimately, piecing together the truth allows the sisters unusual insights, and the possibility of reconciliationAor at least willful toleranceAemerges. Though Cooper's characters rarely stray from the predictable and it's easy to anticipate much of the plot (E.J. always appears in the right place at the right time), many readers will identify with the family's rivalry, jealousy and pettiness in what, as a whole, is an entertaining, light mystery. 4.0 out of 5 stars Another fun mystery from Susan Rogers Cooper, July 6, 2000

This review is from: Don't Drink the Water (E. J. Pugh Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
E.J. Pugh never much liked her sisters, so it's only because the manipulations of her mother that she finds herself spending her vacation with them on a Caribbean island. Family disfunctions play out as expected until E.J. discovers a body in the house with connections to one of her brother-in-laws. She may not much like her family, but as accidents continue E.J. and her lovingly tolerant hubby will investigate to protect them from a murderer.

Although a relatively short novel, the pace is fast and entertaining, interjected with the humor that Cooper has mastered in all of her mysteries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tropical Treat, July 28, 2000
This review is from: Don't Drink the Water (E. J. Pugh Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
This book combined mystery, humor and travel. Anyone visiting St. John will recognize Cruz Bay, lush hills, abandoned sugar mills, and lazy afternoons with fritters and rum! Her relationship with her sisters was real and hilariously funny. She often would go back into her childhood and relate events that explains her love-hate relationship with her sisters. The time she was locked in the bathroom and left on the family road trip made the reader understand her often stormy relationship with her sisters. The murder was the focal point of the book, but her descriptions of St. John, her hilarious characters, and her family relationships kept me turning pages into the dark, humid, tropical night!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great to take to the beach, July 10, 2000

This review is from: Don't Drink the Water (E. J. Pugh Mysteries) (Mass Market Paperback)
Although E.J. Pugh and her 3 sisters don't get along, their mother contrives a group vacation for them in the Virgin Islands. (Though I noted that mom didn't go along on vacation with the group!) Naturally E.J. finds several dead bodies, to the point that the local police chief says E.J.'s group causes him more problems than college kids on Spring Break.

While exploring the island wonders and solving the murders, E.J. finds herself delving deeper into her family relationships. A fast, easy read, you can take this one to the beach with you. I found myself laughing out loud at times.
