4.0 out of 5 stars An avid fan, November 13, 2003
By A Customer
"Don't Get Angry" is a terrific read!! The pace is fast, with intriguing characters about whose lives you want to know more with each page turned. The author is a great storyteller. In this book, the setting is current, but by the time you are finished, the story has evoked a real sense of the 1930's and 1940's mystery/thriller style that was so engaging in, for example, the "Thin Man" series. Readers who have been to Ireland can readily identify with the landmarks, customs and history that envelopes the narrative. The intimate details about Irish custom, geography and history are very realistic and it is clear that the author has done his homework. Friendships are formed fast between the characters themselves and with the reader. The comraderie is infectious and causes the reader to care about the outcomes involving each of the main characters. There are laughs, tension, surprises and a great turn of phrase here and there. For a first effort, this book is a delight. We look forward to many more stories from this gifted author.

4.0 out of 5 stars An espionage novel born from a real life adventure., November 25, 2003
By
According to the author's notes, a real-life call from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms spawned this novel of espionage. Howard Geoghegan spins a compelling plot of adventure set in Ireland. Not everyone is familiar with the political troubles in Ireland, the author does a good job getting us up to speed. We learn about the politics and discord, even between the police forces in Ireland, and the ordinary people (like the author) who can innocently get caught up in the conflict.

When it comes to the heroes of the novel, think James Bond (Ian Flemming) + Jack Ryan (Tom Clancy) + MacGuyver. Frank Donavan, a US treasury agent is good at his job, so good in fact, he winds up with a hit out on his life - a hit that drives him underground, but does not keep him down. Despite his retirement, Frank's innate drive for justice makes for a story rich in plot twists and keeps him crossing paths with a bevy of resourceful Irish agents of similar resolve. Together they doggedly pursue an underground menace selling drugs and acquiring weapons to fuel the violence in Northern Ireland. Bombings, shootouts, double crosses and fist fights, everything a good spy novel should have.

4.0 out of 5 stars A little romance, a little adventure and a few surprises, November 7, 2003
By A Customer
I just finished reading "Don't Get Angry." Mr. Geoghegan has developed a brilliant and likeable cast of characters. He brings you into their lives just enough to get you hooked, yet he manages to leave out enough to make you want to know more about them. There is something for everyone, a little romance, a little adventure and a few surprises. Each chapter is like watching an episode of your favorite soap opera, you can't wait for the next episode to start.

Mr. Geoghegan effectively uses Irish dialects, slang, history and politics to bring the setting to life. I was compelled while reading to pull out a map of Ireland to plot the cast's adventures. The details in his writing would make you wonder if he had not written it during or shortly after a visit to Ireland. So many times I felt like I was there, right in the thick of things be it the adventure or the sense of family atmosphere at the Ahearns.

Mr. Geoghegan, when will we hear more from Kyle, Tim, Frank and Sean?
