Editorial Reviews

An essential Roots sampler with many brilliant and previously unreleased tracks by The Mighty Diamonds, Johnny Clarke, Jacob Miller, Horace Andy, Wayne Jarrett, Linval Thompson and Rod Taylor. In large part a collection of 'sweet high voices of Jamaica', especially characterized by the totally unknown Flick Wilson with his exceptional high falsetto voice. Moll-Selekta. 2005.

This review is from: Don't Give Up Your Culture (Audio CD)
I love Roots Reggae. When I'm not listening to the stacks of CD's these guys are giving me, I bury my ears in endless hours of Jamaican classics. My friend said I got "Reggaemanitus", a state where you can be completely happy for hours on end smoking, and listening to people singing about smoking, as long as it's slow and has lots of bass. Yep, that's what life must be all about right? Slow down and ease back. Loosen up that noose around your neck, and get your skank on. So naturally I am really feeling' this compilation of 70's Reggae gems. I'm happy to hear a good solid hour set of crucial roots on one CD, instead of having to constantly change the numerous vinyl 45's that consume most of my personal space. If you got "Reggaemanitus" also, then you'll recognize names like: Jacob Miller, Johnny Clarke, Wayne Jarrett, Linval Thompson, Horace Andy, Rod Taylor, and the Mighty Diamonds. These singers are backed by the legendary Roots Radics Band, and the equally legendary Aggrovators (Sly & Robbie), and the Ring Craft Posse. This is a worthy set of "Chunes" from a label that appears to be releasing other notable Reggae releases for you Dubheads. "Don't Give Up Your Culture" got a classy package, and will have Reggae collectors playing this one for hours!
