One phone call was all it took!, February 4, 1999

This review is from: Don't Hire a Crook!: How To Avoid Common Hiring (and Firing) Mistakes (Paperback)
My friend knew the pressure I was feeling over hiring new employees and let me borrow her book, so I figured I would try one thing. I dialed the phone even though I was sure I would meet with the obligatory, "Yes, Ms. So-And-So worked here for four months but that is all I care to say." Instead, I learned enough to know that by not contacting the applicant for an interview, I had just saved the company lots of money and a definite future problem. I also learned, through Don't Hire a Crook, what to do if the person called me to inquire about an interview. Reading just one small piece of information in this book saved me all that trouble. I took my friend out to dinner and a movie and on the way I bought a copy of the book for myself. I could not believe the abundance of information inside the covers! Don't Hire a Crook is loaded with suggestions and solutions to every aspect of hiring an employee and yet it is not overwhelming. Unlike other informational literature, this book is far from boring. I've addressed the president at my job with some of these ideas and he thinks I'm a genius! I also strengthened the company's belief in my ability to hire their employees. Dennis DeMey's Don't Hire a Crook is a must for those serious about doing a thorough and efficient job of dealing with employees.

If only it were easier -- well, now it is!, January 29, 1999

This review is from: Don't Hire a Crook!: How To Avoid Common Hiring (and Firing) Mistakes (Paperback)
I didn't realize that there was a potential problem until after it surfaced. Termination of an employee is a painstaking process. Never having had to deal with such a problem and needing guidance, I read tons of articles and books. After reading the first chapter of Don't Hire a Crook I stopped searching and could not put the book down. I found the solution to my problem and handled it smoothly, but more importantly learned that had the business taken more efficient steps, we would not have been in such a predicament. Dennis DeMey not only reveals how to hire, he takes the user through the entire process; from before the applicant even walks in the door to how to keep the good ones! Moreover, he utilizes wonderful examples, tells where to get information, how to get it, why you should get it and what to stay away from. The book's format is laid out in easy-to-use and easy-to-do instructions. It even comes with the forms! Sample applications, criminal background check documentation, rejection letter, education verification letter, workers' compensation release, pre-employment check by phone, a checklist to ensure all the right steps were taken and so much more. It even includes a list of over one hundred screening companies. Incorporate all of it, as our business did, or just take what you feel your business would benefit from. My office has re-vamped our hiring process, it was entirely too easy and should have been done long ago. My search for help is over. Don't Hire a Crook gave me the confidence to make the change and the results are already phenomenal. We have the right employees in the right positions with the right morale. I highly recommend this book, it's a winner!

I've spent the last 15 years building on-line information and background screening services. The knowledge I've accumulated in that time is clearly described in this book. I believe a neophyte could get into the background screening business using nothing else. Editor Mike Sankey is a well known expert in the public record field.

This is a valuable book. Along with Ford's "How to Spot a Phony Resume" I feel I have complete references for screening out bad applicants.
