"Jean Carnahan's is a remarkable story of triumph over tragedy. Don't Let the Fire Go Out! brings to light the remarkable woman I came to know in the U.S. Senate as a colleague, a friend, and a public servant in the truest sense. It is written in the voice of a woman who not only has an inspiring story to share, but a genuine gift in sharing it."-- Senator Dianne Feinstein
"Never has one woman overcome adversity with such spirit, grace, and determination. Jean Carnahan's story is an inspiration to all of us and Don't Let the Fire Go Out! tells her story with wit, charm, and wisdom. It is a book everyone should read." -- Ann Richards, former governor of Texas
"In 2000, Jean Carnahan was elected to the U.S. Senate as a substitute for her late husband. She was asked, Are you qualified to serve as a senator?' Without hesitation she responded, There are those who spent a lifetime underestimating my husband, and I suggest they not make that same mistake with me.' Make no mistake about it, Jean Carnahan is a remarkable woman with a remarkable life story--as a wife, a mother, a First Lady, a grieving widow, and a U.S. senator. It is a story written with great grace by a most gracious lady."--Thomas Eagleton, former senator from Missouri
To me the fire is a splendid metaphor for life. Sometimes raging and fervent, sometimes glowing softly and evenly, other times reduced to struggling embers. In her funeral oration, my daughter, Robin, told of her Dad starting a warm blaze in the fireplace on a cold morning. In his last words before leaving the house, he would admonish those remaining at home, Don't let the fire go out.' During the 2000 election, the phrase became the rallying cry for supporters wanting to revive what appeared to be a lost cause. Within days, a political campaign halted during a disastrous hour was transformed into a hopeful movement."

Fire Still Burning,

This review is from: Don't Let the Fire Go Out! (Hardcover)
Jean Carnahan may have written about it, as well as lived it, but Robin Carnahan coined the praiseworthy title, and the fire is burning a hole in Roy Blunt's bumpy road to the US Senate.
Roy Blunt's political machine is all fired-up about Secretary of State's Robin Carnahan evoking the memory of her Father on the10th anniversary of the death of Governor Mel Carnahan. During the funeral, in an emotional tribute to her late Father, Robin Carnahan pledged that her family would "Not let the fire go out," a reference to a continuation of the Carnahan pledge to the people of Missouri for fare and just representation in government. In my opinion, Secretary Carnahan has every right to reference a phrase she coined in October 2000, and needs to emphasize what a personal commitment she and her family have had to the citizens of Missouri And Roy Blunt, didn't his son Matt Blunt become Governor of Missouri, only to get caught up in some sort of Email scandal? I remember seeing a bumper sticker that read: VOTE OUT ROY - AND HIS LITTLE BOY. Looks like one is down, with one to go. Roy Blunt has no right to get fired-up in this election. Roy Blunt just needs to be FIRED! Thanks for the inspiration Jean, we'll just have to see what the people say in November.

This review is from: Don't Let the Fire Go Out! (Hardcover)
I'm a huge admirer of Jean Carnahan. What a woman! She stepped out of the "shadows" into the light at the worst time of her life and we are all the richer for it. She states immediately that this book isn't a sad one. No, it isn't, but that doesn't mean that I didn't shed a few tears while reading it. She has a wonderful gift for storytelling and I found myself laughing out loud many, many times. Most of all, I'm uplifted by her strength and courage. Her life is proof that, no matter your age, life can begin again after devastating tragedies and triumph. You go, girl! I highly recommend this book.
