3.0 out of 5 stars 60's Rock goes 70's Latin Disco
I first heard this in the 70's. There are a couple great songs: "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" & "Esmeralda Suite" which really get you going. Of course the required cover of "Gloria" is here too. The rest is so so at best, but I can listen to the first two over and over. And by the way...I HATE DISCO!

Here in Florida, it was a huge club hit, and the long version is still played today. There weren't that many Latin flavored disco cuts, but with Santa Esmeralda and another artist 'Gomez' you couldn't go wrong.

This is one of the timeless classic albums. I am just waiting for someone to grab this and do a remix CLUB version (DJ Sammy could do it or others) and make it a hit again.

It would be, its that good.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ahhh..a little more of the REAL disco is released, February 17, 2005

(...) Santa Esmerelda's music took off in the discos, particularly the gay discos. They were examples of the real disco artists, the ones who took ideas & genres of music and mixed and blended them and created new and innovative sounds. Yes, with that familiar backbeat, but then, that's what makes this disco. Their song Another Cha-Cha on a different disc was a mega gay-club classic, filling the floor with dancers every time. But this disc, Don't Let me Be Misunderstood took rock & flamenco and put it to a disco beat and really gave us a great conglomeration of sound.
All too easily people confuse what was commercial disco and what was the real, exciting, thrilling stuff. It wasn't Rock the Boat, it was I Caught Your Act (Hues Corp.) It wasn't Got To Be Real, it was Starlove (Cheryl Lynn). Hey, it wasn't even YMCA, it was San Francisco/In Hollywood (Village People). I'm so glad that many of the full length club hits are making their way from old 12-inch singles to cd. I just wish it was faster.

5.0 out of 5 stars Groovy. Outtasight. Neato, nifty and funky................, April 10, 1999

Hey, it's disco, yet, it's not disco !!!! By golly, I was one of those who threw a disco record on the pile to be burned when the local rock & roll radio station was protesting the flood of disco invading our fair nation. However, this is the one disco-like album I enjoyed. It is unique, provocative and highly listenable. The best song is the title song: an extremely different version of the Animals' Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. Due to the song's length, it's doubtful you will hear it on the radio. Try it, betcha' you like it !!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitely disco - The BEST example, February 7, 2002

I must respectfully disagree with the first reviewer. This is definitely what I would classify as disco. And I was both a club goer in NYC and sometime DJ "back in the day". Contrary to popular belief, disco produced a lot of excellent music, and Santa Esmeralda is one of the reasons why. They were very hot in the clubs, and for good reason.

If you want to know what the REAL disco music was like, circa 1977-1980 listen to this record.

This was one of the best, most juicy latin-disco tracks EVER!!! DON'T LET ME BE MISUNDERSTOOD is a classic!!! That latin rhythm with that brass... and the guitars... ooohhhh so so sexy!!!

I bumped into this CD quite by accident. I never thought I'd ever see it re-released. My folks bought me the LP when I was a kid somewhere back in the 70's... and I rememeber I loved that song.

Years later, I found it in one of those Disco compilations CDs... but it was the short 3-minute version. And I always got the feeling the original track was much longer...

16 minutes, actually... split into two continuous tracks: "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Esmeralda Suite".

Musical extravaganzas like this... only in the 70's. And here it is complete! With brass, strings, everything but the kitchen sink! :P

Now... the 4th track You're My Everything is also a great ballad. One of those slow songs strictly for hot moments (It's all oh so 70's!!!).

And the 5th track is also a great disco song.

This album is such a great experience... I'm really sorry I never thought of getting it before.

Great memories!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Definition of 70's Club Scene, December 21, 2004

I was a DJ in 70's, so I heard it all. But the first time I cranked this album up on our hefty night club sound system, I was blown away. There is only certain music in your life that has the magical ability to do that. If you were there "back in the day" or just want to explore what kind of music really drove the club scene, this album is definately the flag bearer of the Disco era.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks Amazon.com!, November 21, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (Audio CD)
I first listened to this album in Europe in 1978 and loved it. Few years ago I went to a local music store in Michigan (one of those large ones that resemble a warehouse) and, not surprisingly, they did not have it. After spending about 40 minutes with a teenager attendant, full of attitude, I placed a "special" order, paying the requested 3 bucks on the spot (what if I did not come back!!). I received a postcard notice almost 4 months later that informed me that the "title [was] out of print". I was pretty bummed. Then, when Amazon started to carry music titles some time ago, out of curiousity (and based on my pleasant experience of buying books from Amazon) I searched for this title and . . .shazamm!! I received the CD few days later. No hassles, no headaches, no BS, and most importantly, they actually had it in stock!! Amazon.com, I love yaa!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Classical pianist rates "You're My Everything" #1, April 9, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (Audio CD)
My best friend gave me this album for my 16th birthday, in 1977, back in the dark ages, before CDs. Ever since the first time I heard it, I've been entranced by "You're My Everything." It's my favorite song in the world. Even eight years of classical piano performance study in college and graduate school couldn't beat my love for the song out of me.

My LP eventually got a horrible gouge in it, thanks to my younger sisters. (I've never forgiven them.) For at least 20 years, I've wanted to replace the record. Thanks to Amazon.com, I finally have a replacement. I'm pleased to report that I still love my favorite song. All the songs on the CD are great. Santa Esmeralda rules!

5.0 out of 5 stars There is a 16:04 mix of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood ..., July 28, 2010
This review is from: Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood (Audio CD)
There is a 16:04 version of Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood ... and it's on Thump Record's CD called, "FLASHBACK DISCO"! It is an absolutely AMAZING recording of this truly classic disco track. There are long moments of flamenco style guitar pickings, other long horn sequences, Santana style electric guitar, etc. Go get it!
