Book Description

“An excellent read.” –New Books Review
“Original and wonderful.” –The Sun

The U.K. bestseller is now available in the U.S. for the first time!

Former Broadway dancer and current agoraphobic Billy Shine has not set foot outside his apartment in almost a decade. He has glimpsed his neighbors—beautiful manicurist Rayleen, lonely old Ms. Hinman, bigoted and angry Mr. Lafferty, kind-hearted Felipe, and 9-year-old Grace and her former addict mother Eileen.

But most of them have never seen Billy. Not until Grace begins to sit outside on the building’s front stoop for hours every day, inches from Billy’s patio. Troubled by this change in the natural order, Billy makes it far enough out onto his porch to ask Grace why she doesn’t sit inside where it’s safe. Her answer: “If I sit inside, then nobody will know I’m in trouble. And then nobody will help me.”

Her answer changes everything.

By the bestselling author of WHEN I FOUND YOU, SECOND HAND HEART, and PAY IT FORWARD, DON’T LET ME GO is the heart-breaking, funny, and life-affirming story of a building full of loners and misfits who come together to help a little girl survive—and thrive—against all odds.

“Catherine Ryan Hyde at her utter best.” –ChickLit Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars A story that'll stick with you October 19, 2011
10-year-old Grace needs help. Her mother is hooked on drugs and Grace has no one to turn to. She is dangerously close to being put into "the system." Her neighbors, spurred by Rayleen--a product of "the system" herself, band together to take care of Grace and concoct a plan to get Grace's mother back to being a mother.

I just loved this heartwarming story . . . it was funny, sad, and just plan great to read. It reminds me of Hyde's book, Love in the Present Tense, because of the unforgettable characters. I'll be thinking about Grace and Billy Shine for a long while.

5.0 out of 5 stars A deeply felt story June 17, 2012
Format:Paperback
The skill CRH uses with words just gets more and more stunning. The tender compassion she shows for all her characters, even the not so likable ones, shines through every chapter. I have to admit I put off finishing this one because it made me feel so much. But all good stories do this, and like the rest, it leaves me with hope, not false hope, but hope. How can a young girl be so wise, and how can flawed people be redeemed, this book seems to ask, and the answers draw me into their lives. I love how a little girl's needs and strengths unite a group of "outsiders" into a strong, supportive, however uncommon family. I wish more families were like this.

5.0 out of 5 stars Learning Through Grace June 9, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
Having personally experienced both agoraphobia and addiction, this book is very touching.
A small child, age nine, transforms the lives of the misfits who come to care for her.
She cares for them, accepts them and nourishes them as only a child could do.
Don't miss this wonderfully written, heartwarming book.
