This is a book I use when visiting schools with my therapy dog. It teaches children how to be around dogs. The vendor got it to me promptly.

I actually just checked this book out at our local library. We bought our three young children a dog for Christmas and I wish we would have bought this book first. It has great tips for young dog owners and is easy to understand. Even my two year old asks me to read this obook over and over! I will be purchasing this book for my home.

New to dogs? A perfect and charming primer!,
This review is from: Don't Lick the Dog: Making Friends with Dogs (Hardcover)
I just received this book as a gift and love the illustrations. They're fun, downright zany, and full of energy. The dogs, even Maddie (who's an anxious little thing), are representative of dogs that may be new to children or adults. Wahman's recommendations are easy to remember and very effective. They're meant to allow dogs and kids the space to slowly get to know each other - no patting on the head, instead just scratching or rubbing lightly on the cheek or chest, and no fingers outstretched to an unknown mouth but curling fingers into a protected ball. There are suggestions for offering a snack (with the hand held flat) and recognizing the signs for a fearful dog. Wahman's rhymes are catchy and simple, and they stay with you. I'm ordering some for gifts to my nieces and nephew who don't have dogs but do have occasional contact. Loved this!

How To Win Friends and Influence Canines,
This review is from: Don't Lick the Dog: Making Friends with Dogs (Hardcover)
If your dog could shop on Amazon he'd buy multiple copies of this picture book and give them as gifts. A wonderful book, exploding with color, that teaches little kids (and big kids, too) the things they need to know to make Man's Best Friend their best friend.

If your preschooler loves dogs,

...get this book! Both my young children are dog fanatics, but we don't have one ourselves. This book has taught them in a fun & easy way all the basic manners they need to know when approaching a strange dog. The rhyme makes it easy for kids to learn to read along, and the pictures are bright, vivid and fun. After only having it 3 days, we ran into a strange dog and my 4 year old immediately put everything he'd learned from the book into action, to great success! My only complaint, and it's VERY minor, is that the kids say "May we pet your dogs?" without a "please", since I try to teach my kids that any and all requests should have one. But I just add that in when I read it to them!

My favorite dog book for kids!,

I love this book! I bought it to read with the children I nanny to help with dealing with my dog. You can tell a child something over and over, but when you read it to them with a vibrant and whimsical book like this, it just sinks in. The kids go around repeating lines from the book. They also do things like put their hand down for the dogs to smell, the proper way, fingers curled under. I asked them to do this many times, but they didn't do it until I read this book to them. This is my favorite dog book for children and I would recommend it to everyone! It's very fun.

This book has just enough information given in a concise, fun, and easy to understand way. The illustrations are cute, but the message is very useful for anyone who has kids who love dogs. The books helps kids understand the ground rules on how to greet strange dogs and some basics on how to read and react to them.

While this is not an absolute classic, it's a cute story as told from a dog perspective. It'd be great for reluctant dog kids and explains why you shouldn't just go up to strange dogs. You need to let them get to know you first. I liked this book and bought it for a co-worker, also a dog-person, about to have a baby!

My grandkids needed a little help with how to treat dogs, so I got them all a copy. What a great book to help them understand that there's a right and wrong way to interact with dogs. The kids loved the book, I loved that they loved it, and my dogs are relieved. The fact that the illustrations are wonderful, and the rhyme is fun, is a bonus.

A Treasure of a Book,

This review is from: Don't Lick the Dog: Making Friends with Dogs (Hardcover)
One of my favorite aspects of this colorful, entertaining book is that the most important information is presented in short bites (hey, can you blame me for the bad pun?) that any child can readily absorb and remember. Though this book is geared towards young children, it will also serve to educate their parents or caretakers, as the tips on how to meet and greet dogs applies to all. In addition, the graphics are totally FABU! Eye-catching and beautifully done, with bright colors and contrast. In the world of dog bite statistics, young kids are the most likely to suffer disfiguring bites, due to their proximity to a dog's mouth and the often wild and excited behavior they show around dogs. Dogs are not people in fur suits and many are afraid of little kids. Wahman's book shows, in a non-threatening but attention grabbing manner, how to reduce the likelihood of a bad encounter. My contribution to this endeavor was to buy several copies of "Don't Lick The Dog" and donate them to local libraries and elementary schools in my area. |
