'"I want to show you paradise" said the Spider to the Fly...',
By Lucas_M. (Nashville TN) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Don't Look Down (Audio CD)
I remember going to see Cerys Matthews perform a couple of intimate, acoustic shows here in Nashville between 2003 and 2006. I was quite familiar with Catatonia before this time. I believe that an artist's true essence (and talent) can best be determined with simply a voice and an acoustic guitar for company. Having said this, Cerys Matthews is a POWERHOUSE - be it in a studio, with a full band, or just alone with her guitar. On "Don't Look Down," her impeccable musical stylings and precise vocals do not disappoint!!!Forgive me for babbling on, I'll get to the review now. I'll describe a few of my favorite tracks from the album and hopefully give the reader a 'feel' for it. "Into the Blue" is delightful. It has an almost Calypso musical arrangement. The lyrics are playful and all-too-self-aware. "I'm not looking for trouble/ Trouble always finds me/ And I recognize it coming/ And I don't want it to leave." When she begins shrieking, "SAY IT SAY IT" one is reminded of her more aggressive, ferocious Catatonia vocals. "The Spider and the Fly" is my personal favorite. The analogy of a spider luring a fly into its web is used to depict a love affair..."I want to show you Paradise/ Said the spider to the fly." The song vacillates between super-seductive and utter desperation. The music has an epic wall-of-sound vibe. Terrific song! "Smash the Glass" presents itself in a Doo-Wop fashion. Again, incredible lyrics. "I'll stay on my side of town/ Build it up or play it down." Melodic and catchy to a fault. This song will have you humming for days and days. I'll stop now. Do yourself a great musical service and purchase this album. The B-side, "Take Courage" from the "Arlington Way" single is also worthwhile! I have worn out two copies of her last full album "Never Said Goodbye." I have a feeling this cd will need replacing before all is said and done, as well.
