5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, November 20, 2003
This review is from: Don't Look Now (Original Soundtrack Recording) (Audio CD)
A masterpiece of melancholy, this first outing by Donaggio from 1973 for director Nicolas Roeg and his strange, troubling, deeper-than-glances masterpiece about grief and the tricks of space and time.

I've played this score probably a couple of thousand times and still find joys in its Venetian mists. There's the allusion to Mozart in the classic "Love Theme" to the notorious and sweet love scene between Christie and Sutherland, and of course, the red menace of Venice himself, Vivaldi. It's spare, austere even, until it hits the climax and that organ of doom comes crashing in on "The Last Farewell."

The only other Donaggio's scores that have the durability of "Don't" are "Body Double" and "Carrie", but "Blow Out" is amazingly orchestrated, even if a bit overly tragic. I'd argue that "Don't" reigns above the rest in the long haul. It's simple, severe, diabolique, enchanting... just like its setting of Venice.

Yes, take this to Venice with you on a CD Walkman and slink around at night after 2 AM when even the Piazzo San Marco flute player has gone home. Believe me, it's an experience.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best of Pino Donaggio, April 6, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Don't Look Now (Original Soundtrack Recording) (Audio CD)
As much as I love his work on "Carrie", "Dressed to Kill", "Blow Out", "Body Double" and "The Howling", Pino Donaggio's best score is, in my opinion, "Don't Look Now". Whether you are hearing it in the amazing film or by itself in your CD player, this score will force you to immerse yourself in it until the very final track. John's Theme (Love Scene) and Laura's Theme (The Last Farewell) are especially moving, and are my favorite tracks on the disc.

The quality of this CD is excellent; it is one of the best I've heard for a soundtrack. The stereo effects work brilliantly, particularly when wearing headphones, which is nice because the sound quality on the "Don't Look Now" DVD isn't all that great. Finally, we get to hear Donaggio's wonderful score in all it's glory! I can assure you, if you dig Donaggio's work or are a fan of "Don't Look Now", you will LOVE this soundtrack. Pick it up ASAP, while it is still available!
