Book Description

May 27, 2008

New York City is miles from Salt Lick, Texas, in more ways than one, but Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin are rarin' to go. The best friends/beauty shop owners/private-eye partners have been offered an all-expense-paid trip to the National Association of Private Investigators convention in the Big Apple. Debbie Sue sees the invitation as validation, but Edwina has one goal: to get her feet into a pair of super-glam designer shoes, not easily had back home. Yee-haw!

As a sign of things to come, the two Texas tornadoes don't even get out of the state without causing pandemonium at the Dallas airport. And once they land in the Big City they meet Celina, a small-town librarian who's broke and bereft from getting robbed, and Cher, an amiable "working girl" with a heart of gold. Taking them under their wings, they head right for trouble as Edwina nearly starts a riot in the hotel bar.

But the Big Apple hasn't seen nothin' yet! While helping shy Celina hook up with a hunky young police detective, the Domestic Equalizers bumble their way into a murder investigation that could end up leaving Debbie Sue deceased and Edwina stone-cold in her new Jimmy Choos!

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

The Domestic Equalizers take on Manhattan in Cash's latest big hair blitz. Edwina Perkins-Martin and Debbie Sue Overstreet run a beauty salon and the only PI agency in Salt Lick, Tex. The invitation to speak at the annual conference of the NAPI (National Association of Private Investigators) comes as a surprise, but Edwina and Debbie Sue accept since the NAPI's going to pop for the expenses and pony up an honorarium. Meanwhile in Dime Box, Tex., Celina Phillips dreams of becoming a PI and also decides to attend. The three meet and the rest is cornpone kismet when a crime occurs right next to their hotel room, and Celina falls for a sexy NYPD detective. Cash (pseudonym for a sister writing team) crams her latest caper with such wackiness that the contrived plot can almost be excused, but Edwina and Debbie Sue are often so silly that they're downright annoying. From Booklist

Making it in the Big Apple is the last thing Cash’s dynamic duo, Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins-Martin—aka the “Domestic Equalizers”—of Salt Lick, Texas, have in mind, but when they receive a surprise invitation to speak at the National Association of Private Investigators at a swank Manhattan hotel, the gals are off as fast as their pink ostrich-leather boots can carry them. Having befriended Celina, a down-on-her-luck fellow Texan, along the way, Debbie Sue and Edwina quickly become embroiled in a murder investigation in which the prime suspect is one of New York City’s most respected cops. As if that’s not dicey  enough, his partner has just fallen head-over-heels in love with Celina. The usual mayhem and merriment ensue as the Domestic Equalizers wreak havoc trying to bring the cop to justice—and score some fine Jimmy Choos while they’re at it. Quick witted, fast paced, and plain old fun, Cash’s madcap series just keeps getting better. --Carol Haggas

More About the Author

Dixie Cash is Pamela Cumbie and her sister Jeffery McClanahan. They grew up in West Texas during the great oil boom, an era filled with "real-life fictional" characters who cry to be written about. Pam has always had a zany sense of humor and Jeffery has always had a dry wit. Surrounded by cowboys and steeped in country-western music, when they can stop laughing long enough they work together creating hilarity on paper. Both live in Texas--Pam in the Fort Worth-Dallas Metroplex and Jeffery in a small town near Fort Worth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining...., November 10, 2008

Edwina and Debbie Sue (full time hair stylist and part time private investigators) go to a Private Investigator's convention in New York. They have been invited as one of the speaker acts but don't find until they get there that they are giving the course called "Investigating for Dummies". So it seems they are supposed to provide the comic relief for the convention even though they think they are great investigators. There are some laugh out loud scenes and the characters aren't too corny. A very entertaining story.

5.0 out of 5 stars culture war between rural Texas and urban Manhattan, June 1, 2008
This review is from: Don't Make Me Choose Between You and My Shoes (Paperback)
Although they were second choice, Salt Lick, Texas private investigators Debbie Sue Overstreet and Edwina Perkins are thrilled to be invited to speak a at the National Association of P.I.s convention in New York City. Besides a free trip, they plan to investigate all the latest sleuthing gadgetry and designer shoes; not that they can afford any with their beauty parlor being their moneymaker.

The dynamic detecting Domestic Equalizer duo makes friends with natives such as some ladies like Cher who work the street for a living and visitors from Texas like mugging victim Celina. Although they swore no cases while enjoying a bite of the Big Apple, Debbie Sue and Edwina end up in the middle of an NYPD serial killer inquiry in which the murderer considers targeting two dizzy detective dames from Texas.

The latest Domestic Equalizer mystery (see MY HEART MAY BE BROKEN, BUT MY HAIR STILL LOOKS GOOD and SINCE YOU'RE LEAVING ANYWAY, TAKE OUT THE TRASH) is more a culture war between rural Texas and urban Manhattan. The bets are on the two zany Salt Lick hair stylists. As always in this series, the lead duet try to do the right thing as they perceive that to be, but most often cause more problems for those they want to save and leads to plenty of humor. Readers will appreciate the Texas-Manhattan encounter as Debbie Sue and Edwina bring their hearts and humor to Times Square.

5.0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER GREAT ONE BY THE SISTER DUO..., June 17, 2008

This review is from: Don't Make Me Choose Between You and My Shoes (Paperback)
I do have one complaint about the writers, though. They just don't get them out fast enough. I loved, loved this book. My concern at first was that I would not get to see enough of Ed and Debbie Sue once the secondary character was introduced. They take Celina under their wing but they are all involved with the madness that happens in New York.

The reviewer from Publisher's Weekly who called Ed and Debbie Sue "silly" must not have any speck of a sense of humor. Don't pay attention to that part of the review. Dixie Cash fans will not be disappointed.
