This review is from: Don't Mess With la Musica de Tejas (Audio CD)
This CD is produced by The Texas Music Project, a joint project of The Texas Music Educators Association and private enterprise, in order to preserve Texas' unique musical contribution to the world's culture. A previous volume spotlighted local artists from all over the state, some of them world famous (The Dixie Chicks) and some known only locally. This volume features the music of Texas' Latino artists and it is sensational. I was driving through Texas when I bought it on a whim at a Starbucks in Abilene. I played it over and over again all the way to Dallas. This is a dazzling sampler of contemporary Tex-Mex music, which incorporates elements of jazz, rock, country-western, Mexican, Caribbean and god knows what all else to form a unique sound. The album showcases the extraordinary diversity of Tejano music. Most of the lyrics are in Spanish, but there are a few that are in English. This CD is lots of fun. It's sensual, passionate, rhythmic and textured. Its rhythms are infectious. It's hard to listen to this one and sit still. I especially love the Gypsy-style Austin band, Del Castillo. The virtuosity of the individual musicians is breathtaking. Another favorite is Ruben Ramos ("a first tier pioneer of modern Tejano music") performing the catchy "Mi Prietita Consentida." But there's not a bad cut on the whole CD. I can't recommend this one highly enough.
