My auntie passed this book (and another one by Bos I can't recall) along to me when my oldest was about 2 1/2 years old. She was just getting ready (and begging everyday) for preschool and I was trying to entertain her at home. We soon also joined a coop preschool and this book helped set very high expectations for my children's early education. There is not only awesome art and learning activities that can be used at home or in a preschool classroom, but there is loads on how to approach teaching children and to me, what the ideal preschool classroom should be about. I'm disappointed it is out of print, but do try to find a used copy. As a parent or teacher. Be warned...you may forever be disappointed with most preschool classrooms! I wanted to enroll my children into the book.

Great book to give to the teacher who makes all the crafts for her students so that they look perfect. THis book will tell you how and why to allow the children to do all the work. And it'll give you idea's so that you wont feel alone.

Bev Boss is a wealth of ideas for both parents and preschool teachers for engaging ages 2-5 in art, singing, drama, dress-up, stories, etc... She taught preschool very near me in Roseville, CA in the 80's, and she was quite well known locally. If you're going to subject your kids to preschool, you would want them to have Bev Boss as a teacher. However, traditional parents should be aware that Bev Boss is very much a Dr. Spock proponent. In the 40's and 50's, Spock taught parents to "understand" children rather than "train" them. He abhorred corporal punishment; in fact he disliked the entire concept of discipline. Most Christian parents today reject Dr. Spock without realizing it. In fact, upon witnessing the chaos of the 1960's, Spock himself recanted most of his non-confrontational parenting ideas. Unfortunately by then, the damage was done, and people like Bev Boss picked them up. Her activity ideas are excellent, just be sure to ignore the touchy-feely stuff in-between. Bottom line: It's a very good book. Secular, liberal, or postmodern parents can read both of Bev's books (Before the Basics is her other one) happily. Christian and traditional parents should stick with this one for the activity ideas. Homeschoolers of young kids MUST have Bev Boss on their shelf, but again, ignore Spockish tendencies. |
