4.0 out of 5 stars Poised for success
The Roots have been in the game for over a decade making the highest quality hip-hop albums that serve as benchmarks for the entire genre. While critically acclaimed (Grammy award winners) and respected as top artists by their contemporaries ( Jay-Z got them to play as his band on his Unplugged session), they have not reached the top in popular comercial success. The single-savvy sound of this, much like tracks on their last album "Phrenology," makes "Don't Say Nuthin" ready to break into the mainstream while retaining the love of their old fans. It has the organic feel of classic Roots with slick production and a killer hook that's unlike anything you've heard in a chorus of a song. It's a little bit radio and a little bit experimental like much of their recent work. The only reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is that my copy of the single includes only the radio edit and an instrumental version, with no album version, b-side, or additional track. The song itself is fantastic.

THE ROOTS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS. tHE LYRICS AS USUAL ARE ON HIT. THE MUSIC IS TIGHT AND MAKES YOU WANT TO HEAR MORE. THE THING I LOVE ABOUT THE ROOTS IS THERE IS ALWAYS A POSITIVE MESSAGE AND NOT ALL DRESSED UP WITH ALOT OF NONSENSE THAT TAKES AWAY FROM THE MUSIC. THE VIDEO WAS CLASSY AS USUAL NOT ALOT OF DEGRADATION TO WOMEN WHICH I WILL ALWAYS APPLAUD. CAN'T WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW TO HEAR THE REST.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Say Nuthin Bad about this song..., July 23, 2004

...Or else I'll have to disagree with you! This is one tight joint indeed. The lead single off their upcoming album "The Tipping Point", is definitely a solid one. It has an ill beat and all 3 verses are tight ones. The hook, however, I'm not too crazy about, it sounds like it's being mumbled, which sorta plays in with the song, but it's not the greatest. Other than that, it's a great track for sure, may not be getting that much radio play, but Roots fans will be pleased.
