Easy-to-read but hugely insightful and full of practical helps, December 2, 2007
This review is from: Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart: How to Relate to Those Who Are Suffering (Paperback)
This book is a big help to caregivers (those who offer care for others in need) and for the rest of us who merely want to express our concern without making things worse. We all have friends, coworkers and family members who suffer losses and hardships now and then, so this book is for everyone. When I read it, my brother was going through an unwanted divorce. Prior to reading the book, I dreaded calling him because I didn't know what to say and I was afraid of being uncomfortable, saying the wrong thing, or having that awkward silence on the phone. But after reading Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart, I started calling him every few days and became his strongest source of support. This book gave me questions to ask, ways to listen and more. Don't be the person who avoids your neighbor or friend during their darkest times--get this book and learn simple things that can help another heal.

No need to stick your foot in your mouth, September 12, 2009
This review is from: Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart: How to Relate to Those Who Are Suffering (Paperback)
I am not a naturally tactful person, so I have enjoyed reading books and getting training in what to say when talking to people who are suffering. This is the book I would recommend. When we are not sure what to say or do, we frequently make things even harder for hurting friends by avoiding them. If you follow the book's advice, you can be confident that your words and actions will convey the compassion and support you want to give.
