Easy-to-read but hugely insightful and full of practical helps,
This review is from: Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart: How to Relate to Those Who Are Suffering (Paperback)
This book is a big help to caregivers (those who offer care for others in need) and for the rest of us who merely want to express our concern without making things worse. We all have friends, coworkers and family members who suffer losses and hardships now and then, so this book is for everyone. When I read it, my brother was going through an unwanted divorce. Prior to reading the book, I dreaded calling him because I didn't know what to say and I was afraid of being uncomfortable, saying the wrong thing, or having that awkward silence on the phone. But after reading Don't Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart, I started calling him every few days and became his strongest source of support. This book gave me questions to ask, ways to listen and more. Don't be the person who avoids your neighbor or friend during their darkest times--get this book and learn simple things that can help another heal.

If you're like me, and have said, I never know what to say to people who are going through grief and suffering, this book if for you. Practical, step-by-step tips on what to do, what to say, and what not to say as you navigate difficult times in the lives of family and friends around you. You'll be a better friend if you read this book and apply it's principles. There will be less awkwardness in conversing with someone going through difficult times. Definitely will keep it handy in my library.

I am not a naturally tactful person, so I have enjoyed reading books and getting training in what to say when talking to people who are suffering. This is the book I would recommend. When we are not sure what to say or do, we frequently make things even harder for hurting friends by avoiding them. If you follow the book's advice, you can be confident that your words and actions will convey the compassion and support you want to give.

One of the few I will not get rid of. This one led to reading several others on the process of grieving, aging, and hospice care. In any of those areas this is a must read book.

This book is an excellent insight to the tough questions one always wants to know when you want to talk to someone in their roughest times. This books helps you show the care and campassion you have for others without worrying about what or what not to say to them. Goes great as a side by side read with the Stephen Ministry classes.

Wonderful little book for how to relate to people who are suffering or grieving from loss. It helps me greatly in dealing with people who are newly experiencing the loss of a loved one. Easy reading, practical, includes stories which help me to remember an idea better. I'm so grateful it was recommended to me!
