Brandt addresses not the sexual masochism of whips and chains but the "Everyday Masochism" (EM) of self-punishment. Almost half of Brandt's test subjects showed signs of EMthwarted assertiveness, low self-esteem, or guilt. He finds four types of EMs: pleasers, martyrs, perfectionists, and avoiders, all of whom are natural victims for opportunistic lovers, spouses, or workmates. Brandt includes a test to help readers determine their own EM tendencies, tells how to spot potentially sadistic partners, and offers advice on breaking the EM pattern and increasing self-esteem. While the book is well written and will appeal to many readers, Brandt offers little related research to support his theories. Margaret Allen, M.L.S., West Lebanon, N.H.
