2.0 out of 5 stars Title has promise, but doesn't deliver
A friend gave me this book when my daughter died. The title was so perfect that I expected great things from the book. I was sorely disappointed. Even though it has been years since I read it, one passage still rings in my ears. He says that, even if a grieving person requests no flowers, one ought to send them. I was outraged that anyone would reject the wishes of...

After losing my best friend to suicide, I was completely devistated--my world was strange and I was no longer able to relate to those around me. I felt alone in my grief. While attending a support group, this book crossed my path. I was so tired of hearing, "Why aren't you over this?" I read a line from this book that brought me much validity: "Don't take my grief away, I've earned it." What struck me about this book was how it doesn't force recovery. It eases the reader into it. It also allows the reader to identify at many different stages of grief--one week removed from death, to years later. I recommend this book to anyone struggling with recovery from loss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very BEST book to read for a recent widow or widower, July 28, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Don't Take My Grief Away: What to Do When You Lose a Loved One (Paperback)
I have always loved to read. However, after the death of my husband in 1990 I suddenly was absolutely not interested in any book, pamphet, TV guide, etc. (just wasn't able to to concentrate on ANYTHING, much less a book. About 4-6 weeks after his death, I joined a widow's support group. Although I only attended this group for about 2 months, this was the place I found "Don't take my grief away", I took it home and read it from cover to cover - and it re-affirmed what I was feeling and had experienced. I recommed this book to all widows, widowers and also to anyone who wants to know how to help someone after a loss of a spouse. I give this book a lot of credit in assisting me on that very long road to recovery. A HEALTY recovery doesn't just take time ( as 'they' say ), it also takes TONS of hard work

4.0 out of 5 stars More of resource book than a feelings book, January 12, 2002
This review is from: Don't Take My Grief Away: What to Do When You Lose a Loved One (Paperback)
This handbook, written by Doug Manning, is meant to give you an overview of what happens when someone dies, and the choices that need to be made. It is a very easy read that is meant to help you prepare for the funeral and deal with people who do not understand your loss.

I especially love his story on how the book was named and how he developed a new compassion for those that grieve.

A young mother said, 'Don't take my grief from me. I deserve it. I am going to have it.' Though he did not hear the words spoken from her mouth, those words haunted him enough to change the concept he had towards those that greived and the recovery that would follow. He began to understand that though we need to recover and move on, we also need to experience the loss and move in our own time, not someone else's.

I really like, and benefit, from Doug Manning writings. This book is concise, easy to read--each topic is only a few pages in length. At the beginning and end of each topic is a brief phrase--helps a person to put into use what one has just read. Very comforting writing.

Yes, this book has it right. Grief is ours to experience in our own way and to heal as we choose to grieve. Grief is a process it is something that will be with us forever.
I also used Write from the Heart, A Healing Grief Journal with this book. Also for my children I bought After the Tears, A Gentle Guide to Help Children Understand Death (video) This had healing activities. All of these resources are great for healing.

This is the absolute BEST book to help anyone understand grief. Either theirs or someone else's. My girlfriend got the tapes and encouraged my husband & I to listen to them so that we would be better able to help share/understand her pain of losing her husband and our best friend. So I have bought this and given it to others that find themselves in the same circumstances. Doug Manning truly has a way to help you understand how personal and different grief is to each one of us. Just as we all have different fingerprints, we all each have a different way of grieving. There is no right or wrong way to grieve. If you know someone who has lost someone or if you have lost someone I encourage you to get this book and the tapes if you can get them to help in this situtation.

5.0 out of 5 stars This gave my mom hope again, July 24, 2011

This review is from: Don't Take My Grief Away: What to Do When You Lose a Loved One (Paperback)
I recieved this book, which was a gift for my mom, on a Saturday morning .... and she had finished it by Sunday morning - NOT in her character. Since my beloved stepfather passed away from a particularly hateful, aggresive form of cancer, my sweet mom has been heavily grieving. She also has been given/loaned numerous books on spirituality, God and grief, etc., and, as many people would feel, I think, was confused as to what to think. She just called to thank me for the book, and said it spoke to her in ways no other book has. She said it is her new Bible, and wants me to come over to borrow it ASAP.:)

After witnessing so many tears and days when she just wished she were dead so she could see her soulmate again (and I know those days will come again - it's all part of the emotional rollercoaster that is grief) ... to hear such hope in her voice is a priceless gift.

I was recommended this book after I lost my sone in a auto accident. This book helped more than any I was given. I have passed it on to my pastor who found it very helpful. I have since been able to hear the author in person.

This review is from: Don't Take My Grief Away: What to Do When You Lose a Loved One (Paperback)
This book came highly recommended to me. It is a quick read and very informative. This book made me realize that I was not crazy for the feelings I was having and was the beginning of my healing process. I have purchased several copies and given to my family and friends. A must read!
