One of the better Dylan cover CDs, March 19, 2011
This review is from: Don't Think Twice It's All Right (Audio CD)
Here it is 2010 and NO reviews for this CD? I bought it in 1992 and even though I've had a cleanout of lesser 'Dylan' albums - this is one I will always retain.
Musically well produced; good limited choice of instruments; and great singing interpretations. The general feel of the CD is easy listening/jazz.
"Don't Think Twice" has been covered by so many people. This take is wistful and relaxed. The interpretation fits the lyrical intent of the song.
"With God On Our Side" had a great interpretation by Manfred Mann, and I do subconsciously judge others by that. However this is a good relaxed, insightful version.
"When The Ship Comes In" returns to its roots with a Scottish bagpipe intro. Sounds very Celtish - until the next verse when the beat comes in and the song takes off. I've never really liked this song, but this interpretation of it is good.
"Maggies Farm" definitely the BEST all round version I have EVER heard - including Dylan's many versions. A good funk beat. What can I say - it just chugs along.
I can never get excited about "Tears of Rage" but this version is ok.
I've got to say there is only one good version of "Oxford Town" and that's Dylan's original.
"You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" has always been a personal favourite of mine. This version lopes along nicely with bass, drums, accordian, organ, and guitars.
"When I Paint My Masterpiece" is another ordinary Dylan song. Yet this version lifts it and makes it a favourite.
Again "Times A-Changin'" has had so many interpretations. This one stands up though. It sounds thoughtful rather than finger pointing.
"Blowin' In The Wind" has been stuffed up by so many artists. I still prefer Dylan's 'Live at Budokan' version. This trys to enter a gospel range.
"Ring Them Bells" and "Hard Rain" didn't do it for me.
Pity "Dark End of the Street" wasn't included on this CD as its great.
Overall by no means folk music or pop. But as background easy listening covering a different variety of songs I give it 3 to 4 stars.
