Book Description

“I call it creative repurposing: Finding an alternative use—or ten—for items we all throw away every day. Of course, I come from a long line of creative repurposers. My grandmother used to make Christmas decorations out of the specimen cups from my grandfather’s visits to the urologist. And you wonder why I have issues?”  —Jeff Yeager, the Ultimate Cheapskate

Prompted by the recession, the growing interest in frugality, and his passion for environmental conservation, Jeff Yeager presents Don’t Throw That Away!, a practical and entertaining guide devoted entirely to the second element of the old environmentalist’s mantra: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.

With the humor and zaniness that readers have come to love from America’s beloved Ultimate Cheapskate, Don’t Throw That Away!, Jeff’s first eBook original (talk about saving money on paper!), offers a slew of creative ways to repurpose all sorts of items that will have you saving money and the earth’s resources:
· Make a “cheapskate soap-on-a-rope” using a pair of worn out pantyhose and those little slivers of soap you normally discard.
· Craft the perfect inflatable travel pillow using the plastic bladder from inside an empty container of “box wine” (bonus: making one will help you fall asleep).
· Boil citrus rinds in water for 1 minute on the stove or in the microwave for a natural kitchen air freshener.

From bottle caps to dryer lint, latex condoms to sour milk, Yeager proves that there’s a way to repurpose it. Seasoned with thought-provoking facts about our disposable society and with short profiles of some true geniuses of creative repurposing (like the guy who covered his house with crushed beer cans to save money on aluminum siding), this eBook original will have you thinking twice before you reach for the garbage can and saying, “Whatever you do, Don’t Throw That Away!”

5.0 out of 5 stars A Book of Cheap Surprises! April 23, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Do you know how to get a banana split shine? How about the most eco-friendly ways to rid yourself of pesky weeds in your yard? And how many clever ideas are there regarding reusing fabric softener sheets we casually toss into the trash? Turns out, quite a few, actually. In this gem of a book, Don't Throw That Away, Jeff Yeager, guru of repurposing, opens up his cheap stash of 1,001 ideas and shares lavishly.

Guard your pantyhose ladies! Here's a guy who actually loves them. I mean this in a good way. I've never seen so many great ideas for repurposing pantyhose, which is fine by me since I always hated wearing the darned things in the first place. Now I can't be the only woman who feels that way. Ladies, you'll love his ideas.

Although the whole book appealed to me, I especially loved the Garden and Yard section or "Soil Sports" as Jeff cleverly worded it. Since I'm a "Farmer John" type of woman, who relishes working outdoors, I'm always on the lookout for clever gardening tips, which can actually save me money and are also environmentally friendly. This book gives us the pay dirt, and in that refreshing and humorous style we've come to expect from Jeff Yeager. We learn how to make an easy compost bin, using food scraps, and even certain household items marked for the trash can, right down to natural pesticides for keeping our roses bug free, and beautiful. That Cheapskate just waltzes right through our garden gates with his own steamy pan of "soil lasagna" to share.

Nothing is wasted.

Time taken reading this book, and gleaning excellent ideas that also keep our planet healthy, will not be wasted either. Don't Throw That Away is a fabulous book, chock-full of repurposing ideas I'll refer to time and time again. Loved it! My only wish- that it was available in a print version.

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved me far more than the $5.99 cover price May 2, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Jeff Yeager, the Ultimate Cheapskate, makes reusing, saving money, and helping out the Earth fun!

To be honest, before I had seen video segments of Yeager, I always though cheapskates were unhappy misers, who solely lived and breathed for saving money. Yeager's outlook of saving money, while being a responsible citizen, to free up time to do more of what one is passionate about makes sense, is something everyone can do, and it is a lifestyle I happily embrace and refine today.

Happy cheapskates are an infectious bunch, what can I say? :)

I throughly enjoyed reading this book and although I spend a fair amount of time looking online for tips on repurposing items, many of his ingenious tips were things I had never read about. One of these tips was to use expired yogurt in a face mask and was something I had in my frozen storage unit of a freezer. I thawed it out, mixed it with some honey packets I had sitting on my counter for months, chopped up some slightly bruised fresh strawberries, and after a few quick stirs.... VOILA! A wonderfully sweet smelling face mask loaded with healthy ingredients made up of things I had lying around.

Yeager also has tips on what to do with vegetable scraps, old bicycle tire tubes, egg shells, and many other things that you and I would probably throw away without thought.

I also know now what to do with the bacon drippings in my refrigerator. It will make the perfect homemade gift to give to my bacon-loving friend, cannot be bought in stores, and will cost me less than $1 to make.

More About the Author

Jeff Yeager (aka "The Ultimate Cheapskate")

JEFF YEAGER spent 24 years working as a CEO and senior executive with national nonprofit organizations in Washington, DC before launching his career in 2004 as an author, public speaker, and media personality.

Specializing in an offbeat blend of original humor and practical advice for living a better life by spending and consuming less, Yeager was dubbed "The Ultimate Cheapskate" by Matt Lauer on the NBC TODAY Show, where he occasionally appears as a guest correspondent. He also hosted a series of segments, $aving Green by Living Green, on G-Word, an environmental news show on Discovery's PLANET GREEN network. Yeager has appeared as a guest on CNN, ABC News, CNBC, FOX News, PBS, and dozens of local TV stations around the country. He is a popular guest on the nationwide talk radio circuit as well, having been interviewed on more than 150 radio stations, including shows broadcast on National Public Radio, Sirius Satellite Radio, and the Oprah & Friends network.

Yeager's first book, The Ultimate Cheapskate's Road Map to True Riches: A Practical (and Fun) Guide to Enjoying Life More by Spending Less, was published by Random House/ Broadway Books in January 2008. Road Map is currently in its sixth reprint and was the #1 Personal Finance book on Amazon.com. His second book, The Cheapskate Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of Americans Living Happily below Their Means, is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2010, also from Random House/Broadway Books. His work is also featured on his website UltimateCheapskate.com, and his popular weekly blog, The Green Cheapskate, is syndicated by Hearst's Daily Green website (www.TheDailyGreen.com) to leading environmental and personal finance sites on the worldwide web.

During his career in the nonprofit sector, Yeager served as the CEO of the American Canoe Association, the oldest recreation-based waterway conservation in the U.S. (founded in 1880) and a National Governing Body of the U.S. Olympic Committee. Previously he served as director of the American Youth Hostels, the U.S. affiliate of the International Youth Hostel Federation. He also served as the director of fundraising for the Partnership for Public Service, a think-tank based in Washington.

In 2004, at the age of 46, Yeager realized something startling. Because of the experience he gained as the self-proclaimed "Titan of Tightwads" in the nonprofit sector and the positive impact those same management techniques had on his personal finances, Yeager realized that he had reduced his dependency on money to the point where he could retire. Or rather, as he likes to say, become "selfishly employed," free to pursue whatever interests he chooses, without inordinate worry over a paycheck.

Since leaving the work-a-day world, Yeager has done just that. As an active volunteer, Yeager serves on the boards of four nonprofit organizations involved in education and the environment. But most of all, Yeager has used his newfound financial freedom to pursue his passion for writing and multi-media journalism.

Jeff currently lives just outside of Washington, DC with Denise, his pooooor wife of 27 years, and his beloved compost pile, Gomer. He grew up in rural Ohio, and is a Summa Cum Laude graduate of Bowling Green State University. He was a Rhodes Scholar nominee and was voted funniest student in his fourth grade class.

What I Really Believe:

Living on less is a good thing to do. It's the only financial advice that will work for almost everyone. It's about a quality of life you can not buy, a sense of satisfaction you can not fake, and an appreciation for others that gives life value. It's also about helping to save the planet and sharing with those in need. Living on less can be funny, but it's not a joke.
