4.0 out of 5 stars "I heard a beautiful sound...", March 15, 2002
I had read a lot about It Was Hot, We Stayed In The Water and The Glow, Part 2. Supposed classics. Wanted to hear them. But I live in Australia, so I couldn't find them even in the hip indie stores. They did have Don't Wake Me Up, and it was secondhand. So I bought it. I don't know what the later Microphones records sound like, but Don't Wake Me Up does have a definite "early work" sound to it. I'd suggest you should probably try the abovementioned albums to start with, if you want to get into the Microphones.

Still, this one's good. It's only 39 minutes long, and the songs blend together, but in a good way. Very pretty melodies, sleepy indie-pop vocals often buried in sound, boy-girl harmonies, interesting lyrics. Lots of noise--surprisingly, for a band with such soft vocals. Kind of reminds me of the Olivia Tremor Control--short songs with catchy melodies that aren't developed for long enough to make a complete pop song before they end or dissolve into experimental noise. In a good way. If you like that sort of thing (and I do), you'll probably dig it. Especially if you're already a Microphones fan.

You're welcome. What, you'd like to send me a copy of The Glow Part 2, just to show your appreciation? Wow, that's so nice of you.

5.0 out of 5 stars this should be your first., October 14, 2006
This album is their best. The Glow Pt. 2 is definently their second best album but it really pales in comparison to "Don't Wake Me Up," strictly on a song basis- as over all albums they are very close. One reviewer claimed that "Where Its Hotter Pt. 3," the song from whence the cd title "It was Hot, We Stayed In The Water," is often identified with, was on "The Glow..." They are most mistaken, it is on Don't Wake Me Up, track 4, and is a great song.

I am a person who tends to like 1st albums- I feel like attacking myself when I say this because its not an "always" thing (nothing is), I could name a lot of 1st albums that i think are not as good as other efforts, however- much like 1st albums by: The Magnetic Fields, Modest Mouse, 'Defiance, Ohio... those come to mind, and if a group has quite a few albums like a Modest Mouse, or umm Sonic Youth, I like their earlier albums usually more than the later releases.

It is my opinion that Mount Eerie, the album by Microphones, sucks. I have owned it, traded it, and I never even copied it to my computer.

Buy "Don't Wake Me Up," first, experience the music in proper order, and not that that point matters- this is simply a better, FAR superior album to the popular "Mount Eerie," the Glow Pt. 2 is awesome though so yeah you can get that one first but BUY THIS ALBUM!!
