In November 1997, I saw Closer open for Chumbawamba. It was the first time that I thought the opening band was better than the main act! They have an Oasis kind of sound, but offer a lot more musically. The lead singer has a fantastic voice that works well with the music and lyrics.I bought this CD from the lead singer after the show... Since then, I have bought this album at least 5 times. Mostly because the old ones get scratched somehow, or I loan them out and don't get them back. My wife and the 3 friends that went with me to the concert all agree that this group rocks! Get this CD while it's still available as it seems this group fell off the face of the planet. :(

Completely underrated, one of the best alt rock CDs ever....,

I bought this CD after hearing it in an Ann Arbor music store back in '98 and was blown away with the *entire* CD. Closer (who are no longer together, unfortunately) have a familiar alt rock, "Oasis-sy" sound. I've played this CD many times while driving with friends: they eventually begin to bob their heads to the tunes, but suddenly realize, despite sounding SO familiar, they've never heard the songs that are playing, and eventually ask "WHO is this?!" I've probably sold half a dozen CDs for Closer simply playing the music while driving. The entire CD sounds great; it's consistient and demonstrates some remarkably high production values for such an obscure band.
As far as I know, the band parted shortly after the release of this CD. The lead singer went on to form a band called "White Light Motorcade", while the lead guitarist went on to form "Aerial Love Feed" and eventually "Rockethouse", before finally landing a full time gig playing lead guitar for "Stabbing Westward". So, the members of Closer did have some genuine talent. I would strongly encourage anyone looking for some excellent, loud alt guitar rock to pick this up before it disappears into the sunset... |
