5.0 out of 5 stars Even though nobody will see this. . ., February 16, 2001
This review is from: Donut Comes Alive (Audio CD)
This is one of the most innovative, whacked-out god sends of an album I've ever heard. Alice Donut...gone but impossible to forget, not to mention one of the greatest credits to dementia the world had never seen.

4.0 out of 5 stars Alice Donut - 'Donut Comes Alive' (Howler), November 10, 2007
This review is from: Donut Comes Alive (Audio CD)
Originally released in 1988, as this was the New York alternative punk band's first effort. Believe I saw them open for Nirvana many moons ago. During their time together, Alice Donut put out seven CD's and many EP's from 1986-96. Tracks here I got the most out of were the awesome "Green Pea Soup", "New Jersey Exit", the unexpected Donovan cover "Sunshine Superman", the snippet "Love is A Thickle Thing" and semi-humorous "Tipper Gore". Might possibly appeal to fans of the Butthole Surfers, Jesus Lizard, Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Donut Lives, March 18, 2002

This review is from: Donut Comes Alive (Audio CD)
Alice Donut was one of the core bands of Alternative Tentacles back in the late '80s and early '90s. Their first album catches them at their rawest, but also their most fun. "Donut Comes Alive" brings across the presence of a live Donut performance - pure, wild, New Jersey punk, maximum rock n' roll fun - without being an actual "live" album. The album is so full of great songs that pointing out any in particular to look at would be a waste of time - pick anything and you won't go wrong. It's 100% pure punk fun.

Musically, Donut's style has much in common with the psychedlic punk style of the Butthole Surfers, but I regard Donut as being the more straight-up fun-to-listen-to of the two. The Surfers are great, but in a different way. Alice Donut's work is better informed by a sense of humor and a lively attitude than the Surfers, who usually come off as being much darker and more serious. However, this does not mean that Alice Donut does not pack some weight - in keeping with many Alternative Tentacles bands, Alice Donut follows in the footsteps of the Dead Kennedies with thier lyrics - heavy sarcasm, but always socially and politically relevant. Buy this album, sit back, dig the lyrics and enjoy the wild, slapdash music!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Desert Island Disc, November 16, 2007
This review is from: Donut Comes Alive (Audio CD)
I loved this; I sort of knew it would never be particularly popular, but for some reason that never seemed to matter. It's just one of those albums that I can put in and listen to any time. Fun, clever, catchy, occasionally perceptive - what more could you ask for?

"Little Joe and Hoss never did this on Bonanza!"

5.0 out of 5 stars Ingenious Rock, February 15, 2006

These guys were pretty ingenious in their day. This is one of their best offerings, but their albums are all unique and strange enough to be the best on any given Tuesday.

They have, by the way, reformed recently and are playing scattered dates at home and abroad. Their latest album, "Three Sisters" is the first of a 3-part installment of CDs purportedly mixed on a mac.

You really can't go wrong with this group, this album, or any album they've put out.
