Product Description

An examination of a life filtered through small and random, often 'sticky' pieces. The most interesting moments of life are often the ones we tend to discard or form into shapes designed for easier consumption. It is from these random pieces that a whole is formed. Donut holes allow for a taste of something that we normally try to avoid due to either caloric concerns, cholesterol worries and, as is sometimes the case, the fear of pain. Insightful, energetic, funny, rough and delicate...this collection of short stories offers an unfiltered view into a life established to survive the worst and the need to thrive in a society that all too often seems determined to compartmentalize us into undesired places and roles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horrifying, hilarious, and enjoyable, May 25, 2009
By lam3001 (Berkeley, CA) - See all my reviews
Once I got past the introduction and started reading the stories, I had trouble putting the book down and I ended up reading it straight through. Stanfield's casual writing style drew me in, and I was intrigued by his stories. I had several "laugh out loud" moments as he shared glimpses into teenage self-discovery, bankruptcy court, and other surprisingly enjoyable moments. Not for the faint of heart, however, he also shares some of the darkest, most horrifying moments from his past. If you have ever wondered what really happens in the back of a donut shop (and you have the stomach to know), or if you want to see how this talented author made me laugh at the misfortune of a beheaded bird landing on his little brother's snack tray, then you'll find this a good read. Fortunately, once you have finished the book, you can find even more on his blog.

Don't let the intro mislead you. This little book packs a huge punch. Matty Stanfield weaves an unrelentingly honest tale about a childhood of sexual abuse by his father and... Read more
