5.0 out of 5 stars Pick up on it!, July 20, 2003

This review is from: Doodad (Audio CD)
It seems odd that Webb Wilder, a man who once helped the Governor of Tennessee's daughter make a drivers ed film and a guy who claims to have been abducted by UFOs would also release Doo Dad, the best rock'n'roll record of 1991. His "Economy with Dignity Tour" that year had crowds from Dallas Texas to London Europe going nuts. By the spring of 1992 people were flying and driving long distances to catch the show. Webb is part ACDC, part Red Sovine. Smokin' lead guitar work from Donny "The Twangler" Roberts puts this one over the top. The Rock'n'Roll Justice League should investigate why Doo Dad was not a top 10 hit. Now that nasty car jack tunes are being forced down the throats of radio & TV audiences by the Helen Kellers that control the music biz, securing a copy of Doo Dad has never been more important.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Last of the full grown men", February 22, 2003
This review is from: Doodad (Audio CD)
Webb Wilder has been described as "Fess Parker on Thorazine". If that idea tickles your brain cells, that your ears will be tickled to hear this cd.

This group is difficult to catagorize - the term that comes to mind is rockabilly, sort of Bill Haley and the Comets, but that doesn't quite fit the music. It's sort of Gerogia Satellites meets the Beatles.

Though the music doesn't fit into a neatly defined catagory, it is a very good cd. "Tough It Out" is the standout to me, though "Meet Your New Landlord" and "Everyday (I Kick Myself)" are running a close second.

Buy this cd and give your ears something new to listen to - they'll appreciate it and you will, too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rockabilly at its best!, April 6, 2003
This review is from: Doodad (Audio CD)
This album was one of those pleasant surprises - where you buy an album for a single and end up loving every song. The sound is hybrid rockabilly - a blend of hard driving rock with homey lyrics and a lot of rich steel guitar. You find yourself thinking that you are listening to a really good club band because a level of personality and originality comes across that is lacking from so many "commercial" acts nowadays. This is not to say that the music is unfinished or underproduced - the entire album comes across as a very clever, polished product.

Singles like "Tough It Out" and "Meet Your New Landlord" stand out, as does the instrumental "Sputnik".

4.0 out of 5 stars The third release from Webb Wilder and the NashVegans is even better than the second, December 28, 2005

Webb Wilder (the group) is somewhat of an enigma;
they've never gotten either the recognition or
airplay they deserve. Like fellow NashVegans,
Jason & The Scorchers, they're 'too country for
Rock radio and too Rock for Country radio',
even though Webb's got one of his size 13 EEE's
in both country and Rock! OK, enough of the
schtick, eh? Their sound has never been clearer
or better than here and and when I saw them LIVE
at (get this:)The jewish Mother [Deli/& Blues Bar
Band joint](the one that got Busted (not Cheap
Trick), on Sixty Minutes for selling alcohol to
Minors!) in Jan. '93 they were superb. Too bad
only 23 people showed up! [In other words slightly
more than bought Tom Peterson's '84 solo release!]

All the songs, including the ever-present covers
sounded great here. Awesome effort guys and hope
you can get this solid effort back in print. The
fine video 'Corn Flicks' promotes this effort as
well. As with all Webb's efforts, 'Pick Up On It'.

AS A BIG FAN IN THE MIDWEST, I HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE WEBB THE AIR PLAY HE SO RICHLY DESERVES VIA COMMUNITY RADIO. THIS CD REPRESENTS WEBB TO THE MAX. ORIGINALS AND COVERS ARE HEARTFELT AND REFLECT THE FUN THAT THEY ARE HAVING MAKING THE CD---A GREAT COMBINATION. ADD THIS TO YOUR COLLECTION AS SOON AS YOU CAN.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thank God for Philly Radio, January 15, 2005
This review is from: Doodad (Audio CD)
Due to the surprising chance to hear "Tough It Out" on regular radio play, I was itroduced to Webb's music and bought "Doo Dad" (tho I had to special order it) while it was still in print. I have never looked back. This album comes out roaring with "Tough It Out" and hooks you with its hard lyrics, riffs, and punchy drums. Then thru the weird wild ride Webb takes you to the world of rockabilly and space cowboy music you go from earth to space in "Sputnik", the back to earth with the mysogonistic "King of the Hill" and finally calms down from that frenetic ride with "And the Rest (Will Take Care of Itself)." Truly one of best of Webb it is a great album for people to see all the sides of Webb and not get distracted from some of the surreal pontificating that happens on albums like the fun "Town & Country" cd. If you can find a copy, BUY IT. You won't be sorry. Each track is great. Next I suggest a little "Hybrid Vigor" to wet your Webb whistle.

5.0 out of 5 stars I listen to this cd all of the time, April 23, 2004

This is the first Webb Wilder cd that I bought, and I fell instantly in love with all things Webb. Doo Dad is full of standout tracks, but to me the introspective "The Rest Will Take Care Of Itself" is my favorite song on the cd, and one of the best songs ever written.
If you are familiar with Webb Wilder, Doo Dad is what you have come to expect from the last of the full grown men. It's a solid album, with no filler whatsoever.
I had the pleasure of talking to Webb last year before a show and he is a real down to earth guy. He just loves to play, and that comes across in his music. Everybody that I have let listen to this cd has loved it.
Webb has always defied classification, and I think it's better that way. There is only one Webb.

I own roughly 800 cd's. This album since my first hesitant listen about 12 years ago gets the most play of any. It currently is out of print, the powers that be have to re issue it for everyone to hear. You gotta here Hoodoo Witch. Naw you have to here it all, this album ROCKS.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cd, May 1, 2011

This is a grat cd. Webb Wilder is different but terrific. My favorite song is "Big Time". I bought the cd for that song. My next favorite is "The Rest (Will Take Care of Itself". As he sings about the sun coming up and the "sky full of starlings" I can just see them in my mind. Any Webb Wilder cd is a great one.

5.0 out of 5 stars You're never too small to hit the big time.., March 9, 2010

And you're also never too late to discover Webb Wilder. This album is a bar rock/hard rock/rockabilly-ish masterpiece. The best way to enjoy this fine example of high octane American rock and roll is turn it up LOUD. When I first stumbled on this gem in the record store, I bought it for the cover, because I'd never heard of Webb, and then played it for almost a year straight, to all of my friends and anyone else within ear shot. I also taught myself how to play every single song on the record. This is a fantastic recording and why it didn't make Webb Wilder more popular is a mystery. This is easily one of the best CDs I own or have heard from the 90s. I don't know how a record this seismic and fun to listen to managed to slip by most people, but it's a shame. Webb Wilder is an national treasure, a fun showman, and also a decent fellow. one night after a show in Portland, the entire band sat down with my friends and me and they all talked to us for over an hour, even though they were clearly a little wiped out from being on the road for so long. If you like your guitars jangly, your lyrics snappy, and your rock and roll loud, this is just what The Last Of The Full Grown Men has accomplished here. GO GET IT RIGHT NOW.
