5.0 out of 5 stars One Of The Best Of The Early CD Doo-Wop Compilations, November 3, 2007
By

This review is from: Doo - Wop Glory Days of Rock N Roll (Audio CD)
In the midst of their massive Rock `n' Roll Era, Your Hit Parade, and Big Band mail-order only series which got under way some 12-15 years ago, Time-Life/Warner Special Productions came out with the start of a sub-series around 1999 under the generic heading The Glory Days Of Rock 'N' Roll, each with a sub-title indicating the theme of the volume in question.

I'm not certain as to the extent of that series but, in addition to this volume (all of which are becoming extremely hard to find), other sub-titles I know for certain are: One Hit Wonders 1; One Hit Wonder 2; Dance Party; Doo Wop Oldies But Goodies; Girl Group Sound; Golden Classics; Golden Groups; Great Love Songs; Great Rockers; Great Vocals; Hard-To-Find Hits; Instrumentals; Legendary Artists; New Orleans; # 1 Hits; R&B Classics; R&B Legends; Rockabilly; Teen Ballads; and Teen Idols.

Since the selections shown in the Product Description above do not reflect the artists involved, I have repeated them hereunder for your information, at the same time showing the year and any chart details:

Disc 1: 1. Blue Moon -The Marcels (# 1 Billboard Pop Hot 100 and R&B spring 1961); 2. A Thousand Miles Away - The Heartbeats (# 5 R&B/# 53 Pop Top 100 late 1956 with Al Browne's orchestra); 3. Sh-Boom - The Chords (# 2 R&B/# 5 Pop summer 1954); 4. I Only Have Eyes For You - The Flamingos (# 3 R&B/# 11 Hot 100 summer 1959); 5. Stay - Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs (# 1 Hot 100/# 3 R&B fall 1960); 6. There's a Moon Out Tonight - The Capris (# 3 Hot 100/# 11 R&B March 1961); 7. Little Star - The Elegants (# 1 Hot 100/# 1 R&B for four weeks late summer 1958); 8. 16 Candles - The Crests (# 2 Hot 100/# 4 R&B March 1959); 9. Duke of Earl - Gene Chandler (# 1 Hot 100 for 3 weeks/# 1 R&B for FIVE weeks early 1962 - recorded as by The Dukays on NAT but when Vee-Jay purchased the record they released it as by Gene Chandler alone); 10. Come Go With Me - The Dell-Vikings (# 2 R&B/# 4 Pop Top 100 spring 1957 on Dot after having been released in 1956 on Fee Bee); 11. Earth Angel (Will You Be Mine?) - The Penguins (# 1 R&B/# 3 Pop Top 100 late 1954/early 1955); 12. Why Do Fools Fall In Love? - The Teenagers Featuring Frankie Lymon (# 1 R&B for FIVE weeks/# 8 Pop Top 100 spring 1956); 13. Crying In The Chapel - The Orioles (# 1 R&B for FIVE weeks/# 11 Pop late summer 1953); 14. Get A Job - The Silhouettes (# 1 R&B for SIX weeks/# 1 Top 100 for two weeks early 1958); 15. Those Oldies But Goodies (Remind Me Of You) - Little Caesar and the Romans (# 9 Hot 100/# 28 R&B summer 1961):

Disc 2: 1. Sherry - The 4 Seasons (# 1 Hot 100 for FIVE weeks/# 1 R&B fall 1962); 2. Dedicated To The One I Love - The Shirelles (# 2 R&B/# 3 Hot 100 spring 1961); 3. The Book Of Love - The Monotones (# 3 R&B/# 5 Top 100 May 1958 on Argo after having been released in 1957 on Mascot); 4. One Summer Night - The Danleers (# 4 R&B/# 7 Hot 100 late summer 1958 on Mercury after having been released by The Dandleers on AMP-3); 5. So Fine - The Fiestas (# 3 R&B/# 11 Hot 100 spring 1959); 6. What's Your Name? - Don & Juan (# 7 Hot 100 spring 1962); 7. Denise - Randy And The Rainbows (# 10 Hot 100/# 18 R&B fall 1963); 8. You Belong To Me - The Duprees (# 7 Hot 100 late summer 1962); 9. In the Still Of The Night - The Five Satins (# 3 R&B/# 24 Top 100 fall 1956 - recorded in a New Haven church basement); 10. Speedoo - The Cadillacs (# 3 R&B/# 17 Top 100 early 1956 - Speedo was the nickname of lead singer Earl Carroll); 11. My True Story - The Jive Five (# 1 R&B/# 3 Hot 100 summer 1961); 12. The Lion Sleeps Tonight - The Tokens (# 1 Hot 100 for 3 weeks/# 7 R&B early 1962); 13. Only You (And You Alone) - The Platters (# 1 R&B for SEVEN weeks/# 5 Top 100 late summer 1955); 14. Little Darlin' - The Diamonds (# 2 Top 100/R&B spring 1957); 15. Maybe - The Chantels (# 2 R&B/# 15 Top 100 early 1958).

Those familiar with the titles will know that these have since been released on countless other such compilations, many with voluminous liner notes such as those associated with Ace of London products, but if what you're looking for is listed, or in the event you're among the younger set seeking to experience the early days of the Doo-Wop portion of R&B and R&R, then rest assured these are the originals, and with wonderful clarity of sound, augmented by informative background notes and discography of contents. Several nice photos of some of the artists are also included.

5.0 out of 5 stars Doo-Wop Music, November 17, 2008
This review is from: Doo - Wop Glory Days of Rock N Roll (Audio CD)
Doo - Wop Glory Days of Rock N Roll is a two CD set that is one hour, sixteen minutes, and fifty-four seconds. Boy do I miss those golden oldies. This two CD set has the songs that make you want to sit back and think of years gone by. I won't go into details on who is on it since another reviewer gave the whole list. Buy this CD if you want to listen to good clean music; the way it should be. Doo - Wop Glory Days of Rock N Roll gets an AAA+++.
