3.0 out of 5 stars Fairly Accurate Transcriptions Although Not the Easiest To Read!, October 23, 2009
Some of the best Doobie Brothers' hits are transcribed here although curiously some of those with very little guitar work as well for a book with a subtitle of "The Guitar Collection". You'd expect guitar-driven tracks such as "China Grove", "Long Train Running", "Listen To the Music" for example but you also get "What A Fool Believes", "Real Love", "Minute By Minute" and "It Keeps You Running" as well which have very little guitar indeed with the latter track though having the keyboard parts transcribed for guitar. The transcriptions on the whole are pretty lazily done though and are thus not note-for-note and quite a bit of page turning is necessary when you get to the second verse for example where they expect you to turn back to what was written for the first verse. This in itself does not make this a bad book but it does mean that it takes more work for the guitarist to learn this stuff. Not all the tracks are 100% accurately transcribed as well as even the intro to "Long Train Running" is erroneous but it can be easily corrected by ear when you play along with the cd. In fact, I've committed that track to memory some years back already using a tab I got from a guitar magazine which I feel is the far better transcription as compared to the one here. The print is large enough though for easy reading in that sense and the binding is such that the pages stay open and so you don't need to keep pressing to ensure the pages don't turn themselves when you don't want them to. The only problem is that the binding isn't that great as the pages have started to come off the spine already on my copy.

Not the worst tab book I've seen but certainly not the best either but if you are willing to overlook the deficiencies and to put in a bit more work on your own this is a pretty useful way to learn some of the Doobie Brothers' best hits from the guitarist's perspective.

The complete contents:

Black Water - alternate tuning
China Grove - pretty well tabbed and well transcribed guitar solo
It Keeps You Runnin' - electric piano arranged for guitar but virtually unplayable the way it is transcribed; should be replaced with say "Nobody"
Jesus Is Just Alright - excellent transcription and thankfully this is the album version with the complete guitar solos; the only proper way to hear this piece
Listen To The Music - fairly accurate and the solo is well transcribed
Long Train Runnin' - not totally accurate and not my favourite tab of the song as I've seen and learnt from a better one from a guitar magazine
Minute By Minute - keyboard arranged for guitar and again unplayable anyway with little actual guitar work; should be replaced with say "Without You"
Real Love - more guitar parts but again not really a guitar-type tune; should be replaced with say "Natural Thing"
Rockin' Down the Highway - great guitar rocking piece and a well-transcribed guitar solo
South City Midnight Lady - open G tuning piece and well transcribed
Take Me In Your Arms - good guitar solo transcription
Takin' It To the Streets - not a guitar tune and hardly any guitar parts here; a waste of space and should be replaced with another tune say "Mamaloi"
What A Fool Believes - ditto replaced with say "Dark Eyed Cajun Woman"

Overall, I am happy with this purchase because of the album version transcription of "Jesus Is Just Alright" as well as the good work done for "China Grove" and the solo transcriptions of "Take Me In Your Arms", "Rockin' Down the Highway" and "Listen To the Music".
