Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8?Two books in a series about players on a Peewee hockey team. Each one focuses on a different player, with the formula always staying the same: the central character must learn to overcome a flaw that prevents him from meshing with the rest of the team, on and off the ice. Dooby sulks when he is not elected captain of the team?he loses to a girl, which makes it even harder to bear. He must learn to accept the circumstances and come to understand his role on the team. Reed is a "puck-hog" who is moved to defenseman. The books are tightly written, especially for series books, with the first-person narrators speaking in a tough, no-nonsense, sometimes edgy voice. It is fun to see incidents through each player's eyes. At times, however, the narrators hardly sound like kids: "True the coach told me to start trying this risky style of play, so technically I am excused from humiliations that might accrue." Another caveat is the way the dialogue is handled in Dooby, with dashes used instead of quotation marks, a la James Joyce. Some young readers may find this disconcerting and a lot to wade through. Still, these titles are short enough and entertaining enough to qualify as high-interest reads.?Todd Morning, Schaumburg Township Public Library, IL

This review is from: Dooby (Wolfbay Wings) (Library Binding)
Dooby is a young boy who is about 12 yrs. old. Doobs is the mouth on the team and everyone admires that. He is a derfenseman on The Wolfbay Wings hockey team, and this year he was voted the C (captain). Then when a girl comes on the team and her dad just happens to be pretty whealthy and wants to make her captain. The team coach says to Doobs that he has to approve it or he will be fired, and as you can imagine Doobs gets pretty mad, but all the team does is dealwith it as nothing happened. Doobs gets so mad at the team that he decides not to talk to anyone, but he doesn't even notice what he is doing, and the team needs his mouth in the games. During the teams first couple of games the players notice that Doobs hasn't been talking, but even though they notice nobody even bothers to talk to him. Finally one of his freinds, Ernie, asks what is wrong and he points at the girl "Nathan." A couple of days later Doobs finds out that somebody scratched the word "PIG" into Nathan's dad's car, and set a pile of hockey pucks on fire in front of his house. He goes over to her house and reconciles with her. The next day Ernie tells Doobs that his older cousin did it, and Doobs is a little startled, but he doesn't tell. At the Wing's next game Doobs starts talking again. And at the last game the Wings won because of Doobs and of their hard teamwork. This is a good book to read if you are a sports fan, and it shows how after all the trouble a person can go through and still end up a great team player.
