A Favorite,
By
This review is from: Doodlebug (Library Binding)
I found this book at a garage sale when I was perhaps seven. Even though I knew very little about horses, it quickly became one of my favorites, what with the cute story and the wonderful drawings that accompany it.
Now I'm about to be seventeen - sure, not very old, but still ten years older- and I recently found Doodlebug tucked away in a little-seen corner of my closet. I'm now a competent rider, and this book is still one of my absolute favorites; perhaps more so, because I can understand now why it was so "horrible" for little Jennifer to buy a lame pony. "Doodlebug" is a wonderful book for anyone who has ever loved a "less than perfect" animal.

Charming text and pictures,

Doodlebug is a heart warming story for young readers about a young girl who dreams of buying her own wonderful black stallion but takes pity on a neglected small black pony at a stock-sale. There are wonderful pictures of "before and after" of the neglected pony named "Doodlebug" and Irene Brady is a very talented artist. Her pictures are a delight. Adults will enjoy it too.

I've loved this book since I was a child. It is a sweet story that I embraced as a young horse lover.

A constant delight.,
This review is from: Doodlebug (Hardcover)
When I was a kid, I found this book among the collection of books of my 3rd grade teacher had in our classroom and I kept borrowing it so much that she let me keep the book at the end of the school year. A few months later, I was lucky enough to save my money to buy my very own horse and I found a cheap but very sweet, almost black, small horse of my own at an auction that had no papers and had no idea who he was or who he had belonged too before he was brought to a pay-for-rides stable. When my mom asked me what I wanted to name him, I immediately told her he would be my very own Doodlebug. (I called him Doodles for short.)
Turns out my "no papers" pony could actually do high level Dressage and was an amazing jumper, allowing me to compete at the Junior Olympic level until I outgrew him in my early teens, after which I used him for lessons. He also went on to win a bronze medal in the Paralympic Games in 1996 and was on the Gold Medal winning team. My pony is no longer with us, but I still have this book and the story of a pony that was more than what he seemed at first glance to remind me of him. I highly recommend this book for any kid, but especially horse crazy ones like I was. It's also a good story to teach kids to not judge others by what is on the surface, because you never know what might be under the exterior.

I remember checking and rechecking this book out at the library when I was a girl in the mid-seventies. This is the ultimate horse book for the little girl who is as horse-crazy as I was. I was even lucky enough to have a pony of my own!!
I treasured this book so much that I went back to my hometown library and gave them a very large donation and bought the original book with the original library card in it that showed by signature and how many times I checked this book out. Now I share this wonderful story with my kids.
