Deborah Zemke has illustrated more than 30 books for children and adults, including picture books, activity books, cookbooks, and business guides. She lives and works in Missouri.
The pages of this book were intended to be used for children's placemats, and I think that is a fantastic idea. Kids will definitely be occupied, and it will be worth your money if you have little ones and need to entertain them during a meal in public. However, we bought this book for our 10 year old, not for placemats, but for the fanatstic drawing instruction. We have purchased many "how to" drawing books over the years, and most of them have been more complicated than instructional taking the fun out of art and learning. This book succeeds in teaching and in entertaining. Right away my daughter was drawing hilarious pictures that looked great and she was really enjoying herself. The book shows step by step how to draw several neat pictures. Each one is only about 4-6 steps, but they create wonderful pictures. The pictures were easy to draw, and the instructions were very clear and simple. We also decided to draw the pictures largely on the paper and use watercolor pencils for the sketches instead of regular pencils. Then we went back and used brushes and watercolor paints and painted the pictures. They turned out to be very pretty works of art. I highly recommend this book for hours of fun and creativity. These activity sheets would be a great, inexpensive starter for an elementary art co-op.
I totally agree with the book description. These placemats are handy, useful and fun. They're ideal to take on a road trip so that you always have a doodle mat on hand, but they make breakfast (or any meal) fun at home and could keep the little cherubs happily occupied while mom fixes a meal. This would make a great gift for a child, to be sure, but moms will appreciate them just as much! - Biblio Reads Children's Book Review
I bought the whole set of these "Doodles" placemats: Doodles at Breakfast, ..... Lunch, and ....Dinner. Also I bought Chicken Soup Doodles. The breakfast Doodles are not for a time when you and your kids are hurrying to get ready for school, but are fun when it's a Saturday morning or some other morning when you're having a leisurely breakfast. The doodles are of things that kids love to draw, and they're fun. Anyone under 7 years of age probably would need some help from an adult. Adults love them too.
I am an art teacher and I keep these books on hand for my art students to use in their free time. Although I do not allow them to tear out the pages they are welcome to look at them and follow the drawing instructions on separate paper. These are great for my younger students to gain confidence in their own drawing abilities. The pictures are helpful and precise and if followed carefully will yield a great drawing every time.
Although I know the book was designed as a tear-out I do wish the pages did not come out so easily hence the 4 stars rather than 5.
