I've had it for about a month now. Works great!
I was a little worried about digging a hole 4 feet deep, but using a post hole digger worked just fine. Just make sure the post hole digger you purchase is at least 5 feet tall or it'll be more difficult. We have an almost 9-month-old shepherd mix and I was concerned that she'd try to get in the doggie dooley or try to eat it. It hasn't happened, at least not yet. I installed it off to the side of the house because I didn't want it right in the middle of the yard. I'm very happy with this product!

Be careful,

This thing worked great for a while. But pretty soon the doggie doodie wasn't "liquifying" like it should have, even though I followed the directions (using their powder) and deposited the "load" of one dog, rather than two. What's more, what WAS properly overflowing into the hole apparently wasn't seeping into the soil much, because a few months later it would overflow no more. Now I have a four foot hole full of Doggie Dooley doodie that I don't want to go near!
Great idea for a product - very green. But be careful. I would actually give this thing one star, except for the outside chance that my soil is simply rockier or less porous than the average garden. I'd say, dig your hole before you buy this, and if you get four feet down and the soil is still porous, maybe it'll work for you. Didn't for me.

Nasty Smell,
This review is from: Doggie Dooley 2000 Plastic Septic-Tank-Style Pet-Waste Disposal System (Misc.)
Read the info on the Doggie Dooley website. If your ground does not perk well (drain) don't bother with this because it will stink to high Heaven. Other than than it is easy to install and maintain but our ground is not suitable for this item. I had to pull it out due to smell and flies.

Very cool concept, and I had the highest hopes for this product, but it asks for a 4ft deep hole (not to mention a fairly perfect circle is required), and a hole that deep is hard to dig if you're a city dweller. Though not impossible when using the recommended posthole digging tool (perhaps rentable at Lowes or HomeDepot for the city dwellers), it is not necessarily a hole for the novice hole digger.

Poop Chute,

My girl calls it the poop chute. It's still dissolving my beloved dog's turds after 2 years so I would highly recommend this product. Lawn looks nice without brown logs everywhere.

I live in FL and we have very sandy soil so drainage is good and it works well. My problem is I prefer to only pick up the poop once a week, not daily, and that's not really how this thing works. Also, I didn't want it near the house so I put it in the back corner of the yard and now I have to carry a 3 gallon bucket of water to it every time I use it. This is my fault for putting it where I did.
Overall it's a good product if you're willing to pick up the poop every day or every other day but if you're a weekly scooper like me then you may want to rethink it.

We've been using our device since January 2011 and it works great. My husband dug the hole so I can't say how tough that was but you need to completely cover the tank, with the top at ground level. He placed ours at the edge of the yard with a slight slope downward out of the yard. We live in Florida, with very absorbent soil, a very small yard and one medium dog. We love it; we pick after her two or three times per week and the doggy dooley takes care of the rest. We save rainwater for the "grey water" and add the Digester mixture once a month.

Green way to deal with pet waste,

We've had this for at least a couple of months now, for our 50 lb. dog, and so far it is working just fine.
Our primary motivation to get it was to have a more environmentally friendly way of dealing with dog waste, rather than tossing bags into the trash. Saving on not having to buy bags is also a plus. It was a little tough digging a narrow hole that was deep enough, even with a post hole digger. The manufacturer recommends 4 feet, but we could only get to about 3 or 3 and a half. The Doggie Dooley definitely smells when you open it to add waste or water, but when closed we haven't noticed any odors in our yard (which isn't very big). Considering that you essentially have a stew of dog waste sitting in the Dooley at all times, I think the lack of smell is impressive. I would definitely recommend this so far! |
