5.0 out of 5 stars The game that started it all... March 12, 2002
After a hard day at work, there's nothing more satisfying than planting your good old double barrel in an imp's belly and giving him the heave-ho. Doom was the beginning of a new era in PC games. It's graphics engine technology and style have shown up in almost all first person shooter games released since it's original debut. It's enduring legacy is due to the fact that the authors kept the game strategy simple: find the bad guys and blow them to tiny bits. No complicated keyboard/mouse movements or hard to use weapons, just lock, load, and kill or be killed!

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best FPS ever! August 1, 2004
By Andy C
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Well, let me tell you. I've had Doom II since it came out. And, it is by far the best shooter I ever played!

Story - 7/10

It goes like this: You just returned from the moon which was infested with monsters, and you come back, and what do you know? There are demons everywhere! They came strait from the depths of Hell. They killed almost the entire human race. Now, it's up to you to save the Earth!

Graphics - 8/10

Meh, it came out in what, few years back? What did you expect? But, I guess they were ok back then. Hey, I'm not complaining. So, the graphics aren't too shabby when it comes to the blood and gore! :-)

Sound/Music - 10/10

The music is pretty catchy! I love the music. The sound is very good also. It's really not that bad. And, when you fire your gun, or the monsters see you, the will make noises! And it makes this squishy sound when you hit a monster with a rocket up close!

Controls - 10/10

The controls rock! The moving and shooting are so easy to use! Don't even have to aim, just point in the direction and BOOM! The moving is good. Just move with the arrows. Also, you can run when you hold shift + up/down arrow.

Gameplay - 10/10

Man, the gameplay is just unbelievable! This game has 32 all-new levels! Also, with 7 weapons and a NEW WEAPON!!!! The super-shotgun. And you have new demons too. The guns are: the pistol, the shotgun, the super-shotgun (the new weapon), the chaingun, the rocket launcher, the plasma rifle, and the all mighty BFG 9000! Which when you fire it at an enemy and hits them, it will hit nearby enemies to! Well, the object of this game is to blast monsters through out the level and find the exit. Then, you progress to the next level. All the way till the last one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Here is why people have still been playing it since 1995 December 11, 2001
The original Doom was such and incredible first person shooter they had to make a totally new 32 level Doom with lots more monsters, such as the Chain Gunner, the Pain Elemental, the Arch Vile and others, but still the same old weapons and graphics. My second point is the fact that they are still selling Doom 2, they are no longer selling the original Doom except for in a bundle. So since 1995 and the game is still around and selling strong, must mean something! So what is Doom 2? In Doom 2 you are a soldier just coming off of a mission in space (Doom 1), so you must return to planet Earth only to discover it has been taken over and then from there go into the heart of it all, Hades and destroy the monster behind it all. The levels are incredibly detailed with 100s of new wall textures, where you actually believe you are in a city slum overrun by monsters, and you go to the lair of the monsters to destroy the big bad bosses. With that being said, why are people still playing it? Because Doom 2 is the surface beneath it all is a whole community that supports Doom 2 by creating new levels, some easy and simple, others 64 levels of pure pain continuing the saga or starting a new saga, with new enemies, new wall textures and fun. There are even expansion packs sold with 1000s of new levels to keep you playing forever beyond the original Doom 2!

5.0 out of 5 stars Download a Port !!!!! August 7, 2006
By ZDoomer
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Buy this game for the .wad file. You only need the doom2.wad to make a port to work. If your Windows XP makes Doom lose sound or plays slow you NEED a port, they are made for Windows.
There are many ports out there, all free.
I suggest a port like GZDoom if you have a faster computer. Anyone who complained about graphics, wont be complaining anymore.
If GZDoom runs slow, use ZDoom a more basic version. ZDoom still supports high resolutions and both ports greatly enhance many aspects of gameplay.

[...] Many of these maps contain cut-scenes that actually show you a movie in game that progress story.

I may also mention you can play Doom online against other people very easily with Skulltag or ZDaemon.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Gut-filled, monster-packed blast-fest from Hell! February 8, 2006
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Woohah! I just finished "Doom 2" again on my PC about 3 or 4 days back, and I've gotta say that I absolutely loved it!

The storyline is a simple as possible, probably designed to keep you, the player, focused on the game as a whole rather than being distracted by the story itself. In a nutshell, Hell has broken loose on Earth and the demons have taken the population of Earth hostage. You are a Marine who has managed to survive the invasion of Earth, and now it falls upon you to beat back the Demon Hordes, free Earth's population and destroy the mastermind behind the sinster attack - even if it means going into the heart of Hell to do so. It's so terribly simplistic that it's poetic - it's the original storyline that sparked off all FPS Games after it. Today storyline would get 6.5/10, but in 1994, it would've gotten 9.5/10.

Graphics wise, "Doom 2" is not spectacular, but unlike "Doom 1," you are able to adjust the screen resolution to create smoother looking enemies and environments. Levels are cleverly designed however and there's alot of space to shoot enemies with weapons like the Rocket Launcher. The enemies and characters are all 2-Dimensional, but there's quite a significant amount of detail that has been put into each and every character and Demon. By today's standards, the detail is purile. But back then, it would've been revolutionary! I dunno, for me the Graphics don't detract from the game itself. I would give the Graphics 6/10 for today and 10/10 if it were 1994.

Sound is alot better in "Doom 2" than in "Doom 1." "Doom 1" had terribly lame sounds for enemies, and I couldn't help but laugh when I shot a Zombieman! I mean, when the guys die, they go "HOOYA!" I mean, come on, that's hilarious!
