3.0 out of 5 stars Too bad the Plot is unoriginal
The Dragonlance series was my first experience with the fantasygenre over 10 years ago. Since then, I have read many fantasy booksand dabbled into D&D gaming.

I thought this book was well written and humorous at points. The only thing is that the plot is unoriginal. It's straight out of your typical AD&D game: find a treasure map, go through a dungeon, defeat...

5.0 out of 5 stars Evil People Have Feelings Too!, January 9, 2000

A few Christmas's ago, I put on my Christmas list "Dragonlance-The Chaos War Series", thinking it the title of the triliogy with such titles as "The Dawning of a New Age", etc. Instead, I received two books that really held the title. Among them was a vibrantly-colored novel entitled "The Doom Brigade", which caught my eye because of the dragon on the cover. It was the best mistake I ever made. Before I read The Doom Brigade, I had always pictured draconians as pure evil, and not once considered that they were creatures that had feelings. My thoughts and stereotypes were immediatly changed after the first chapter(Which I had sampled upon my completion of "Dragons of Summer Flame"). One thing that especially piqued my interest was the prospect of the female draconians, and the story as to how they were never born. Kang, the roughly 200 draconian's leader as well as the subcommander Slith are suprisingly easy to understand, they are so well portrayed by the authors. What makes this story so intriguing is the way you see bits of the War of the Lance through the other side's point of view. Being recently given the technical term of "teenager", the question of how others see things should be interesting to apply in real life. If you don't own this book already, you seriously need to obtain a copy as soon as possible! It has personally replaced "Mariel of Redwall" as my all-time favorite!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Doom Brigade, May 27, 2002
"The Doom Brigade" by the husband and wife team of Margaret Weis and Don Perrin features the life and times of an eccentric group of Draconians during the same time period as "Dragons of Summer Flame". These draconians have made a small little settlement, and have managed to live a reletively peaceful life in the mountains. They only have to deal with a dwarf raid every once in a while.

The authors of this book do an amazing job portraying Draconians as more than just the killers they were portrayed like in the first Dragonlance books. It is nice to read a book from their point of view, seeing exactly what they feel and think about the other races on Krynn.

This books has an amazing storyline, and is full of enuogh action and adventure to keep any fantasy reader hooked. There is tons of humor in this book. All of the characters have their own personality which is nice to see. The main characters in this book, including Kang (the lead Draconian), and his right hand man..err..Draconian, Slith, are all nicely developed and portrayed well.

The story and characters keep this book a fun read all the way though. It is one of the better books in the Dragonlance world. Not only are the characters fun to read about, but it is also fun to read from the other side for once. Seeing the story through the eyes of Draconians and not through the eyes of the "Good Guys".

5.0 out of 5 stars Long Live Kang, January 11, 2006
Draconians. A race of dragonmen created from stolen eggs of good dragons, and very powerful and dark magic. Draconians first appeared in Dragons of Autumn Twilight, and now after the Chronicles they star in their own novel: The Doom Brigade.

I had recieved the Doom Brigade as a Cristmas present. When I saw that it was written by Maragret Weis, I knew it was going to be something. The main character of the story is the bozak draconian named Kang, who along with his fellow draconians is learning what it means to live a somewhat peaceful life. However there are many conflicts that disrupt that...the neighboring dwarves, the regiment of dark knights they inlist with for a short time, and an unknown threat that seeks to destroy the world of Krynn. However hope remains, as Kang discovers the location of where some female draconian eggs might be found.

Needless to say, this book is great. Like in all of her other novels, Maragret puts together a cast of incredible and unique characters. In a sense there are no "good guys" in the story, but Kang plays a pretty good character who you will cheer for all the way. The plot in itself is pretty good, and it sets up for the future events in the Dragonlance story. I encourage any Dragonlance fan to pick up this novel.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fun adventure, September 5, 2003
A book centered on Draconians....by Margaret Weis. You're joking right? Not at all. This book will change your entire opinion on the little known race of dragon men. And when you mix aggresive draconian warriors and scheming dwarves, you know there will be some laugh out loud moments. Through everything Weis and Perrin manage to string together an engaging plot with fun well-developed characters. Unfortunately there are some proofreading/editing mistakes (more than in any other book I've read). But it doesn't really get in the way. This book won't change your life, but it is guaranteed to entertain.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Other Side, August 1, 2000

This story is a nice break from the usual stories about "the good guys". It shows a side of the draconians that one would usually not think about. It is very entertaining and has lots of action at the same time. I highly recommend it. It's one of my favorite stories of Krynn.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Doom Brigade, December 17, 2001

This review is from: The Doom Brigade (Audio Cassette)
A truly excellent fantasy novel. The Doom Brigade is a story about a group of draconians that have settled in a land after a war. The only problem is that now they have to put up with irritating dwarves. The dwarves have raided their land now for 25 years, and a small group of dwarves have now discovered a map to items that a very valuable to the draconians. With the dwarves mission to destroy them and the draconians mission to retrieve them, the conflict only partly begins. Then when the draconians run into fearless fire dragons hell breaks loose on both parties and life and death is now at risk.

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing, funny, original, November 30, 2000
By
Jiame (Budapest, Hungary) - See all my reviews
I thought I've long since grew out of Dragonlance books, I haven't been following them since 'Legends'. By chance I picked up this one and it was much better than I thought.

These low-profile, down-to-earth characters are not heroes, but survivors and they don't really care. The dwarves are especially funny and cool, those little stinkers, and the draconians are also great. Both parties are likable, all three-dimensional. All in all it's an absolutely average story with excellent character portrayals, good chemistry and great many funny situations.

Though I must admit there were lots of goofs, like axe changing to sword, Daergar to Daewar, onyx to obsidian... not much proofreading. Also, I was aware which parts were thought up by Perrin - these parts are the funny and the down-to-earth segments, while Weis writes her usual formulaic epic arches. The combination, however is one of the most entertaining and funny DL books.

A refreshing read, highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definately one of the best books I've read.., May 26, 1999
Have to give the authors credit, this is DEFINATELY a great book. At first i thought draconians were kind of boring to make a book about, but i was wrong.. this book centers on a community of draconians, sustaining themselves on brew and Dwarf Bashing, until they learn of a secret treasure(one that could mean the life or death of the draconian race). Unfortuantely, a group of wayward hill dwarves(who are also main characters) also know of this treasure, leading up to a thrilling race to the bowels of Thorbardin(where draconians and hill dwarves aren't exactly welcome). along the way, the dark queen sets the commander of the draconinans on a mission to help save the world from chaos, which happens to go hand in hand with his treasure plans.. Though the dwarves presented interesting characters, I was really cheering for the draconians through this one, they were portrayed in a humorous and intelligent manner, and I have the sudden urge to get my hands on some Dwarf Spirits.. at any rate, a wonderful book for any reader of fantasy novels!

5.0 out of 5 stars My first Dragonlance Book, and the best, June 9, 2001
A Kid's Review
I started with this book, and, the minute I finished, I dragged my father to the Bookstore and bought about 30 more. I now own a collection of 60 and this one's still my fave. I wish I get the next part, either through Amazon or buying it. The book provides the Draconian point of view, sitting happily thinking about what to do, and dragged into a battle against Chaos by the promise of a better future
