No question about it: Doom is one of the greatest games of all time. The blend of a simple, yet compelling mission, breakthrough 3-D interface, brilliant level and weapon design, and the effective use of fear made Doom an instant classic and launched a revolution in computer games. Born on the PC, this game has been ported to almost everything imaginable, and the PlayStation port is one of the best.

You play the part of a space marine who was stationed on a research station on the Martian moon, Phobos. Something went very wrong when the researchers opened an extradimensional portal. Now you're trapped far from home, grabbing guns and ammo to blast the demons. A one-man crusade, you shoot everything that moves--and, likewise, everything that moves tries to return the favor.

This was the game that launched the multiplayer craze on the PC, and the PlayStation version does its best to live up to Doom's reputation as the ultimate multiplayer deathmatch game. If you have two players, two PlayStations, and a link cable, you can enjoy some mad two-player mayhem.

A few words of caution: remember that Doom was the first wildly successful first-person shooter, and while its graphics were astounding for its era, it hasn't aged well. If you want the latest and greatest graphics, you'll be disappointed, but if you're into quality gaming and appreciate history, you'll still get a huge blast out of Doom. --John Cocking

Pros:

  • Lots of mayhem
  • Terror mounts as your ammo count drops
Cons:
  • Older graphics
  • Nothin' but violence
  • Sluggish when compared to the PC version

I saw Doom for the first time about 10 years ago when a friend of mine was playing it on his computer....and up until that point, playing old 8-bit Nintendo games summed up a fun day for me. Don't get me wrong, and I'm not knocking some NES classics here at all by any means, but I must say, I fell in love with Doom the moment I saw it. Too bad the (...) was so hooked too that he wouldn't let me play.
So....fast forward to the release of the Playstation....and the eventual release of Doom. I bought Doom the first day it came out....and my Playstation wasn't turned off for 32 straight hours. I ABSOLUTELY love first-person shooter type games, and aside from Rise Of The Triad (the first FPS I ever played) Doom turned my world upside down.
This is, by far, the best video game on the planet....hell, in the universe.

The translation from the PC to the Playstation was flawless....hell, in my opinion, it's even better. You get all of the Doom and Doom II levels, and an additional 5 secret levels custom-made for the Playstation only. That's 59 total levels of mayhem....an immersive quest that you can NOT tear yourself away from.

Sure, by today's standards, the graphics are primitive and full of sprites and look a little blocky when you're up close....the enemies and items are modeled in 2D, meaning you can never look at their backside....and heck, you can't even jump....but....WHO CARES? This game is heaven, and even today, will still scare the (...) out of you....even if you memorized the location of every enemy in the game, knowing what to expect around every corner.
Don't believe me? Well try this situation on for size: You just cleared out a room full of Imps and Sergeant Zombies with every last round of shotgun ammo you had.

Doom isn't a game with revolutionary graphics or sound effects. It doesn't try to be.It is, quite simply, a mood game.If you get really peeved off at something then just pop in one of the ol' Doom games (although the first will always be my fav)and kick some demonic bootay! Just think about it, the demons resemble people we all loathe. Mancubus is the big fat ugly smelly retarded school bully we all love to hate! Cyber Demon and Spider Mastermind are the school principal . The Baron of Hell is your stupid brother with his strange pants and retro boots and his goofy haircut . He's the brother who got sunburnt trying to tan. :) So next time you get mad , don't hit a punching bag, pop Doom into your playstation and fry some demons!P.S. It is a classic and you can't dis a classic! :)

I had this version in the 90's and played it while a teenager. I now repurchased it and am playing it in 2008 as a 28 year old. It is STILL visceral, brooding and epic in its dark atmosphere. In some ways, the minimalist "3D" of the original DOOM (particularly in this port) lends itself well to the overall gloomy atmosphere. It creates a certain... menacing bleakness in the landscape.

One thing that REALLY makes this a DOOM to remember is the TOTALLY BENT, EPIC DRONECORE DARK AMBIENT SOUNDTRACK. Playing DOOM on my modern computer, despite the incredible graphics, just isn't quite the same without that HAUNTING soundtrack. Seriously, the soundtrack to this particular version of DOOM is so totally harrowing and visceral as to be nearly a moving life experience. You will never quite forget it after hearing it. The soundtrack is certainly one of the best of all time (for a video game). It is profoundly moody, unrelentingly heavy and completely out there. It sounds like something Steve Roach might create after surviving a journey through Hell and then having Trent Reznor as the music producer.

Overall, this is quite a good port over to the original Playstation. Original DOOM is an all time classic with brilliant level design and awesome action that set the standard for years. Pick up this version used and fade away into that crazy soundtrack from another level of existence...

doom for playstation is amazing, so good that i am purchasing it for the second time. it is revolutionary, a great advancement in graphics from its father game: wolf3d(another must have), the start of what is known today as "the first person shooter". while it originally was released on pc, and i used to own it on pc, both are good, but i prefer the ps1 version. it is more than one game in one so theres no switching discs. your playstation is not going to get a virus and crash, so you will always have the game(so long as you take care of the disc), and it runs quickly because playstations do not have to compete with other programs. the real bonus here though is the combination of doom 1, ultimate doom(an expansion pack), and doom 2. plus the fact of improved graphics from the very first release of doom, all the classic weapons and monsters, and a roiling good time!

The game "Doom" has reserved itself a place in history as being one of the most popular games of all time, and why shouldn't it be? It has everything in it you could possibly want: lots of bloody violence and gore, ammo that would put Hussein's arsenal to shame, and a setting and characters that are surreal, disturbing, and altogether engrossing. There is no mystifying puzzle to discover, only lots of bloodshed to be had, and the game allows multiple levels of difficulty so you can have as little or as many villains as you want coming your way. The levels of play graduate from simple to hard, and finding your way out of some of these mazes is almost a puzzle in itself. If you like tearing things up, then this is the game for you!
